We can put our Premier League wobble behind us as we turn our attention to our Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Wednesday. Jose has already won the League Cup four times in his career and we are just 90 minutes away from reaching another semi-final. We are likely to ring the changes, as are the Potters, who have been struggling for goals of late. We should be able to shade this one and the game could provide a platform for Gareth Bale to be the difference maker.
It has been a tough few day for us, picking up just a point from three Premier League games in the space of seven days. A 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace was followed by a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool and a 2-0 loss on home soil against Leicester City. The Carabao Cup may be a welcome distraction for us that have drifted down to sixth place in the Premier League, having led the way in the table for past three weeks, and with one eye on next Sunday’s Premier League game against Wolves, Mourinho is likely to make changes to his line-up.
Potters boss Michael O'Neill is also expected to rotate, with his side well in the mix for promotion from the Championship, sitting seventh in the table, only outside the play-off places on goal difference. With bigger fish to fry in the league, O'Neill might look to rest some first-choice players, something that could end up playing into our hands. With just one goal in their last three Championship games, stoke have been finding it hard going in the final third recently. Tyrese Campbell is the club's top goal scorer this term with six goals in 16 appearances but he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Cardiff City at the start of the month.
Much of our success this season has been built on a solid defence and we should be able to secure a shutout against Stoke. Bale will be looking to add to his two goals for the season if given an opportunity by Mourinho. The Wales international, on loan from Real Madrid, is still having to work hard to earn regular starts here after struggling to reach peak fitness. He came on as a half-time substitute against Leicester last time out and having often featured in midweek in the Europa League, should be fresh to start in this game. Expect Stoke to struggle to cope with his pace and direct running. Those qualities should see the Welshman get his name on the scoresheet on Wednesday night as we aim to book a place in the last four.
