Just got a call from someone who works in the sports department of RTE to say that there are very strong rumours that Stauntons departure will be announced at 6pm this evening.
Is that such a bad thing? He led Leeds to a Champions League semi final. At least he has some sort of managerial experience, Staunton had none. I think the FAI were looking for someone who they could push around, can't see O'Leary standing for any of that shite from them.
i feel bad for stauny really. he was put in a no win situation. he was stuck with robson as a 'co-coach' and though the guy might have been competant in the past, its obviously no longer the case (even disregarding his past medical history).
he hasn't had much to work with and he said all along that he needed time to get the kids up to speed. i think for the most part he has done well to get rid of a lot of dead wood in the irish squad. even with a measure of success with players like carsley and kilbane, we've seen more youngsters develop and be capped in a year than in ten years under kerr.
when it comes to the irish squad, people have to stop living in the past and realize that keanos not around anymore. ireland are nowhere near a top 20 team and recent results have shown it.
i think he should (have?) be given more time. its not like theres anything else to play for anyway....
