That’s not factually correct. He did go to Bill Nick but never made the claim he was the best player. What he thought was that he was a better midfielder than Perryman which proved demonstrably true.

I had another delve and found this quote by Souness:

"Most definitely. I wasn't prepared to wait; it had to happen then and there. That's why I ended up leaving Tottenham. I used to go in and tell Bill Nicholson that I was better than Steve Perryman, Alan Mullery and Martin Peters when I was 17 ! He'd tell me to wait and I'd get my chance. But that's no good to me."

For all his abrasiveness I rather like Souness. Some of our players could do with his will to win.

So basically because he bounced into the gaffer’s office chatting crap that is why he is on one about Bale doing the same at a time when pushing claims to be starting was also not justified.
