Tottenham could be just one or two signings away from challenging Liverpool and Man City at the top of the Premier League.

That’s the view of former Liverpool and Wales striker Dean Saunders, who joined talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast.

It'll take more than a couple, Dean. We need a deep bench too, like Liverpool, Chelsea and City. Especially with five subs now.

I think we're on our way to getting that. I haven't been this excited for a season in years

I really think we are closing on them, but I like how we are under the radar. If we can beat the likes of chelscum, we will be up there.

That's why it's vital to not sell everyone we upgrade on.

Our two best CMs from the start of last season will be battling with Bentancur and Bissouma for playing time.
We've added Perisic without selling any left-sided players (yet).
If Eriksen signs, he'll be in addition to the midfield and attacking options that ended last season with, not instead of one of them.
Spence would probably go straight into the starting XI, with whichever of Emerson / Doherty is deemed best retained.

All of the above can improve our starting XI, while simultaneously adding depth to our bench. We need to continue in that vein with a LCB, then add a forward as back-up for Kane/Son like Liverpool did with Jota (as we can't really upgrade on them) and maybe a back-up

Our lack of depth last season mainly stemmed from:
Dele, Lo Celso and Ndombele underperforming and then leaving mid-season (I consider Betancur, Bissouma & [hopefully] Eriksen to be their replacements).
Gil wasn't ready for the PL yet, so we were left light in the winger / wide-forward positions.
Our recruitment in recent years had been planned around a back four, but then a new manager came in and switched to a back five mid-season, rendering some fairly decent players unsuitable.
