When this survey was run we had Dempsey, Brad and Bales image was being used to promote the sport...

Add to that the fact that we've sold two top class strikers (Keane & Defoe) to the MLS it doesn't seem that suprising that our name is recognised out there.

Put it this way if there was a similar poll on MLS teams most of the people on here would vote LA Galaxy or Toronto (something...) due to Becks/Keano and Defoe. You're not likely to see a Galaxy shirt but they're the ones we'd probably opt for as we have a connection.

as a long time American footy fan who travels frequently throughout the continental US, I can assure you that this is utter rubbish. there's not a chance.

This was debunked when the actual poll came out last year. It's not even close to true. I live in NYC and i rarely see Spurs apparel.

Florida is full of English people on holiday, wearing their Chelsea/United/Arsenal/Liverpool shirts...
Wouldn't say that Florida is a good place to use as an example.
Florida only has tourists as designated points of the year, and I'm not really referring to tourists but rather people I know that live here. Chelsea is the dominant club in Florida wherever I go, just a bunch of bandwagoners really.

I was chatting to some guy who said, early on into the conversation:

"Whoah, you're from London, right?"

I said yes, to which he said:

"Cool, I was born in London"

To which I asked: "Really, whereabouts?".

"Reading"

That even happens over here

I remember a friend of a friend telling me he was from London too (while making pointless chit chat with the people on my table at a wedding in Birmingham) and when I asked which part he said North London so I asked where specifically and he told me Luton - well Dunstable.......Oh right, so you mean North OF London

Funnily enough the Bride and groom had their honey moon in South East London too (The Maldives)

Agree with pook above. I've lived here 12 years and that 'poll' is utter bowlarks. There's no way.

He's in line to be the next Secretary of Defense too

what? Has Tim Howard been advocating an invasion of Iran or some other oil rich, miltarily weak dictatorship that the US previously supported?

well that is the criteria for being US Sec. of Defense n'est pas :)

I know, I thought it was a piss take but apparently the notion received enough votes that Obama had to consider it. His response went something like, "Tim is a great guy and if the position was vacant I'd give it a more detailed look into but we have <insert warmongers name here> in the position and they're doing fine."

The poll was aimed at neutrals who knew nothing about "soccer". Can't remember what the questions were but they weren't really about football as such, just about what sort of things you look for in a team. I remember a couple of guys from Red Cafe did it for a laugh and were pissed when they found out they should support Spurs.

I am the only Spurs fan I know in north Texas, and being involved in the local youth league for the past few years I know a lot of American footy fans.

As far as the NASL v MLS comparisons, football is here to stay in the States. I dont know if it will ever rival the big sports here but they have built a sustainable model, as opposed to the old NASL. And satellite TV means European football is here to stay in the States as well and that will drive up interest in MLS. It hasnt for me because the product is still so crappy, but it will help.

The product isn't "still so crappy", that's why it's not growing in the states. It's increased leaps and bounds over the last few years. An equivalent for style of play would be the Eredivisie. Lots of goals scored, very open play.

It's never going to be the EPL but people should know that and accept it for what it is. That's the issue i have with my fellow Americans. If it's not the best then they aren't going to watch it.
