One of my footballing heroes! RIP JC

Such grace, elegance and style, a travesty he never won a world cup medal.

I was very early teens, early 1970s, when Cruyff arrived on the scene, and that Dutch team and Ajax were a beautiful thing to behold. For me, it was the first time a team, that wasn't Brazilian, played a game that truly inspired the footballing senses!

It translated to the playgrounds and parks. And us kids were practicing the outside of the foot pass, attempting to move with Cruyff-like grace, trying to trap balls with Cruyff-like poise and imagining that we had his vision, composure and ability to outfox opponents with an unexpected swerve, drag back or outrageous crossfield pass!

He had a huge influence on the game and everyone who loves it!
I was at the European Cup Final at Wembley in 1971, most neutrals were there to see him I'd say.

Watching the 1974 World Cup Final on a black and white tv on a summers day with my Dad is one of my first and fondest memories - and the day football became an integral part of my life. I actually shed a tear when Cruyff died, thinking of it.

Looking at some of the tribute videos of him i have to say i had forgotten the genius of the man, the way he just glided past players and run the show was the mark of true greatness.
Only maradona was better for me because Argentina were average and he made the difference between them winning the world cup, but both would be in the top five of all time for me football geniuses.

Most clubs posted something nice. Spurs of him and Hoddle together, Arsenal with him visiting them, Barcelona with a 'thanks for everything' type message.

Liverpool's first response was this, and many of the comments are calling them on it: https://twitter.com/LFC/status/712984996399681537

Their second was much better, but the first one is still there: https://twitter.com/LFC/status/713015331946700800

This was one of the replies:

I am rarely touched when a footballer - or any other celeb for that sake - pass away but with Cruijff it's different. I am not going to start an argument over who's the best ever footballer but for sure he was amongst the top 5 best ever footballers (on my list) but no footballing personality has had such an impact on the football game as him - as a player, head coach and "adviser". He was immense. He conned the term "Totaalvoetbal" (Total football) and was part of building up arguably the 2 best football aceademies ever since the 1970s: Ajax and Barcelona (I know Barca's acedemy "developed" more like in the late 90s). And I can go on....
