In a world where ‘winning the transfer window’ is an actual thing discussed by actual people, it is easy to forget that there might be another way.

This is part of a series analysing every teams chances. It's not just a rehash of "you don't always need to spend" stuff.

We're a gauranteed top 4 team i if you ignore the fact we play at Wembley. The fact we are at Wembley make it the most difficult to predict ever. I'm normally pessimistic as I've been at this too long so I'm gonna say 5th this time round because of Wembley. If it was WHL I'd be saying 3rd.

The collective half a billion plus spent by Chelsea, City and Utd combined says we'd be doing incredible well to get top three this season. We have a quality first XI but it's going to be very difficult to compete on a level field alongside £500m.

4th would be more than satisfactory this season.

So one major transfer then.

Yes. A top four finish playing at Wemberley would be outstanding in itself. Adding Sissoko and Onomah to Bonzo on the "out" list, and considering Erik and Danny are still sidelined along with Son, our squad does look significantly weaker than last term, though. We really need to bring in at least 3 quality players to improve our squad if we want to be in with a realistic chance of retaining a top 4 spot. Our first IX is still excellent, but we need more quality in the squad as our current crop of youngsters don't look ready to compete at the highest level yet.
If we manage to bring in Barkley, Simeone and Henrich, or others of the same quality, we will look a whole lot stronger - but time is running out and with pre-season pretty much ending today we already missed the chance to have new players integrated in the squad before they put on the shirt.
Everything taken into account, 4th place would be a great achievement, so lets go for that, but I do fear we will have to settle for less this time and have a very hard time keeping the team together after that.
Not a ball has been kicked yet, though, so anything is possible beginning tonight. Juve is a tough opponent in our last friendly considering our recent Wembley record, but I really hope the team steps up and the fans do their bit to make them feel at home. COYS!

Having a settled squad should mean we hit the ground running while other teams squads have to get used to each other.

We have to make sure we do that or it could be more difficult later in the season.

I think we have a flaw in our pre-season model where Poch overly values hard training over hard competitive matches (going full tilt).

I think he's got the balance wrong and we'll start slow again this season.

Last season we won 5 and drew 2 of our first seven games. We did not start slowly. When HK got injured in October that was when we lost ground on Chelscum.

Must have that impression because of the everton 1st game draw and having 2 draws in first 3 games.

But you're right, wasn't a disaster.

To be fair you may have been thinking of 2015 / 16 when we lost 1 and drew 3 of our first four games. Now that WAS a slow start!
