They were overly reliant on loan players like Maatsen and Tella last season and they didn't bring any of them back in the summer. The replacements they did sign have all been pretty poor signings that haven't been PL quality. And worst, Kompany has sacrificed his principles of passing football and it hasn't made them one iota better.

It's been a disaster season all round for them.
I think they’ve been lucky Sheffield United have been so bad, or there’d be more focus on how shit they’ve been.

Smh if we end up signing Gallagher for £60m or whatever when we could have had Alex Scott, a Spurs fan, much cheaper and with a higher ceiling IMO.

If we buy Gallagher, it won't be for £60m. It looks like we're not that bothered and will only move for what we consider the right fee given his dwindling contract.

Alex Scott has gone to a place where he is a first team starter. This will help his development. He's much more likely to reach that ceiling if he is to get regular football.

Right, but I wasn't suggesting we sign Scott and not play him. We're clearly in the market for a player just like him, and if he's good enough, he'd play.

"If he's good enough he'll play" is a lazy cliche.

To play regularly he'd have to perform better than 2 of Sarr, Bissouma and Bentancur or better than Maddison if he wants to play further forward.

He hasn't taken the Prem by storm and clearly has some development to do before getting to that level.

I overwhelmingly, almost always, agree with your posts but I disagree that I was using lazy cliche. I'd say to dismiss it perfunctorily as you have could be argued to be equally as lazy.

Maddison and Bentancur are hardly in peak form right now. Hojbjerg is still getting minutes. If we sell him and Skipp, we'll need someone in, and I would rather we went for quality and let them fight for their place. Then you add in injuries, and the importance of a strong squad is clear.

Even if everyone was fit and in form, if Scott was showing better in training than his peers in midfield, he would indeed play.

Scott might not have "taken the Prem by storm" (is that a cliche? :)) but he's clearly an exceptional talent.

I stand by my view that it is a lazy cliche.

Haaland and Bellingham are 2 of the best players in the world right now. As teenagers they went to the German league to a team who plays youngsters to get first team football which helped them develop to get to their level. They didn't go to a top team in a top league straight away as the cliche "if you're good enough you'll play" just isn't true at these teams.

Maddison is another good example. We were interested in him when he was at Coventry, Norwich and Leicester but each time when young he chose teams where he'd play regularly to help him get up to level. We are now reaping the benefits of this.

Everything in your post about Scott is exactly what I fear about us signing him now.
  • he'd play ahead of Hojbjerg, our 4th choice centre mid.
  • he'd play when others are injured - he'd be bit part.
I think your points just completely ignore how young players develop. The more players choosing regular football over going to a big club too early and being a squad player the better.

Good points, well made.

Then again, Vini Jr went straight from Flamengo to Real and absolutely killed it. At the highest pressure club in the world. So when you say:
the cliche "if you're good enough you'll play" just isn't true at these teams.
It clearly is indeed sometimes true at even the biggest clubs in the world. But perhaps that's just a single, albeit high-profile, outlier and your point stands as true far more often than not.

Thanks for challenging me in a constructive way.

That's a pretty pi$$poor bench United have today.

As for the starting XI, good luck with a central defensive pairing of Evans and Varane.

Just shows what a job Sean Dyche did. Sounds like they will stick with Kompany.
Dont forget this is a town of around 100k people. Ground holds 20k. Cannot charge stupid prices in that area. It is an achievement just to be in the Prem lge. The likes of Sheffield Wednesday languish in the 3rd division. Bournemouth ground only holds 11k but there is money behind them otherwise they wouldn’t be where they are. As football clubs, give me Burnley every day.

ETH will likely be gone at the end of the season. It won't happen now.

They got a few results without looking anything special. Now it's hopefully time for the results to go back to what they were previously.
