It’s claimed that after Manchester City agreed João Cancelo’s transfer to Bayern Munich, they made a ‘last hour approach’ to sign Porro from Sporting.

Record says the Spaniard already ‘had already committed’ with Tottenham by then, and ‘didn’t even hesitate’ when faced with this new offer. He ‘wanted to keep his word’ and turned down any chances of rejoining Pep Guardiola’s side.

If that is in fact true, he's already endeared himself to the fans. It was also refreshing to see him so excited and thrilled to have signed for us during his medical. I cant wait to see the impact he'll have on the team.

Guardiola pretty much confirmed it in his presser.

Wanted to help his team in their cup final before departing.
Turned down Man City (possibly higher wages, as well as increased chance of winning trophies), to keep his word, despite not having signed a contract yet.
That's exactly the kind of loyalty and team ethos we need! :)

Of course, we would never hijack a transfer from anyone, like, say Everton.

Good job we signed Damjuma to balance things out then.

Can we fault someone for changing their mind when their prospective new club suddenly doesn't have a manager?
If Conte left that same week, I'm very confident we would have ended the window without any signings.

I'm not having a go at him. I'm not bothered either way.

I wonder if man city were only offering a 6 month loan with no obligation to buy?
Guardiola will be looking for particular qualities and in the summer he'll have a wider choice rather than be limited to whoever happened to be transferring in jan and hijacking the deal.

It is a nice thought porro turned them down in our favour but given there are uncertainties of who will be managing us and who the owners might be plus that CL football next season is looking pretty remote, I think if it was a straight choice....

He was also there earlier in his career. Given they sold him maybe he didn’t want to go back and was excited by a fresh challenge/team?

Great to hear nonetheless and does buy him some credit with the fans with a home game against City up first thing. Nice!

He's done everything right so far. Didn't kick off when there was uncertainty, committed to playing the cup final with Lisbon, seems absolutely made up to be here and turned down money bags City to honour his agreement with us. What a way to start his career here and he hasn't even kicked a ball yet.

I hope we mirror his commitment and bloody well win something
