I think a lot of our bad performances have been mainly due to Mourinho setting up with a pivot midfield and watching as they get outnumbered and beaten to every 50/50 or second ball. PEH and Ndombele end up chasing shadows most of the time. v Newcastle he actually had PEH on his own with Ndombele and LoCelso further forward, and the result of that was Newcastle having 22 (?) efforts on goal and the highest Xg on record. The players get some of the blame but Mourinho has constantly set them up to fail in the middle of the pitch where the vast majority of games are won or lost.
True, but we tried Hojbjerg with a number of partners and as a pair they just can't move the ball forward. Many of them don't want the ball at all and others will pass it backwards or sideways at best. That is not their game they will argue.

So we have sat an attacking midfielder in a more defensive role, and we can now move the ball forward but we are very very open. To be fair we are winning many games, but this pair will not get us into the CL.

Will be interesting to see how this manager sets us up in the final. Will he be encouaraging us to play with and to our strengths or primarily to nullify the opposition?
I think we all know the answer to that one lol.
I hear 2 new buses are being delivered tomorrow lol.

No plan? So what did he tell Sanchez? "Make sure you pass the ball straight to a opposing forward in your defensive third so that we concede a goal"?
1. when a cross comes in move to the corner of the penalty box out of the way
2. if you cannot stay in that corner run in to a team mate preferably Joe Rodon.

When players know if they make a mistake there is a fair chance of them being banished then you get these shit performances. Let players play and of they make a mistake train them to fix it.

Man management has gone tits up at Tottenham.

Would you enjoy going into work to work for someone who has no plan and consistently slags you off when their "second to none" methods never work?

Stevie Bruce is the latest manager to out tactic Jose and they were not even at full strength.
If I was getting 100k a week and didn’t have to put any effort in and then got to blame the manager at the end of it, I would bloody love it!

The players lose patience with Mourinho! Personally I have lost patience with watching these players put in pathetic performances against teams they should be slaughtering. They way they capitulated in Croatia was unforgivable and they have succeeded in making Brighton and Newcastle look like Bayern Munich. Mourinho has made mistakes but these players should look at themselves and their performances.
I honestly forgot about Croatia ..... thanks buddy :(

We're going to get this shite for the rest of the season now. Journos smell blood, and an easy colum / time filler.
We've been getting "this shite" since last season, with only a very brief hiatus while we were top of the league.

We played with a pivot in midfield under Poch (Bentaleb + Mason, then Dier/Wanyama + Dembele), so I don't think that's the issue. There may be significant differences in the personnel and how they are trained/instructed to operate, but the two man CM pivot worked well enough for us in the past.

We were shocking defensively with Mason and Bentaleb. The only time the pivot was any good was with prime Dembele and Wanyama (and when Dier was OK to a lesser extent.

Playing better but still haven't won anything since he's gone.

The issue is two fold, players these days are too spoilt and entitled, the manager need to take his fair share of the blame but I guess it's easier to back the players over the manager.

It's a lot easier to move the manager on than numerous players no matter who at fault.

From my recollection, everyone blamed the players not the system or manager.

We so obviously needed a DM at that time and Poch had kicked Capoue into touch. He didn't get anywhere sorting it until he got Wanyama in and gave Dembele his chance. Putting Dier in there worked to some extent but not really that great, so I'd attribute plenty to Poch and poor recruitment.

So I've read it's the players but we've changed players before and it's the same thing. The it's the manager.....well again we've changed the manager more often than the players and we're still in the same situation.

I really don't know what we need to do. The only thing that's not changed in the more recent years is the owner. Do we need new owners? I really don't know. What I do feel is we need to change the quality of the players we're buying. L'pool bought a defender and a keeper for big bucks and they won the PL and CL.

We finished 3rd with a Dier + Dembele pivot and 2nd with a Wanyama + Dembele pivot. I'd say the system works, but only when the players are good enough to make it work. Our back 4 of Jan, Toby, Walker & Rose played more than a small part - each of them has either declined or been replaced with an inferior player (even Reguilon is defensively worse than a prime Rose).

You certainly need 4 top players at CB and CM to be confident in a pivot midfield, and I don't think anyone would argue that we haven't had that since Toby, Jan, Victor and Moussa.
