Everything about Spurs is bizarre at the moment, on the face of it keeping the players is a good thing but equally if we miss out on bringing through Foyth and Tanganga it might not look so wise in 3 years.

Verts is 32, Toby is 30. Verts is already on the decline imo. Tanganga and Foyth are 20 and 21 respectively. They'll get the chance if deemed worthy.

Absolutely, I don't want to get all caught up in the past 18 months and the politics that is pure conjecture from us as fans, what I care about is in the medium to long term what is the best decision. If I was Jose I wouldn't rush to get them signed onto new deals I'd take a sample of games and see if I think they're on the decline and also whether Foyth/Tanganga are showing signs of stepping up.

Anyone disappointed if Toby signs new contract, because he has gone downhill, are far off the mark! Previous regime caused a lot of confusion, which was challenged by many. And most were not playing to their true worth. Toby will excel under Jose.

It's a bit unfair mate tbh. I wouldn't want to commit to somewhere I thought I wasn't going to progress any further. You are thinking as a fan and not as an employee.

They see a different picture to the one you see. Especially when clubs that are actually winning things are showing an interest.

Oh absolutely, i dont begrudge them it at all, but football is a game of what ifs and i just cant help but wonder what if.

I hope you're right, dropping the backline back will help and I suppose like everybody else he deserves time to find his rhythm under the new manager but as I've said, feeling less confident atm but fingers crossed he gets back to his level.

I know where you are coming from. But trust me when I say that Toby was all over the place under Poch. Both him and Jan were very vocal with Poch in how the back line should play. There was a lot of disillusionment around the camp. There is a lot of fresh air around the place now. Players are being played to their strengths.

Must admit I'm not as confident in Alder as I was even last season, feel he's been at fault for a fair few goals. I think if Sanchez was making similar errors then they'd be extremely critical, obviously Alder has some credit in the bank but as I say I'm not as confident in Alder this season.

I can understand why, they were being asked as a 2 to play a high line whilst the fullbacks pushed up and they didn't even have a defensive midfielder to sit back with them and allow them to spread out, even against Liverpool and City too. That's a tough ask even for the likes of Matip and Van Dijk let-alone two CB's with the Belgians pace.

This isn't a good reflection on Poch tbh

From a PR perspective I can understand why we would be keen to sign them up quickly as it would show that there was problems with management and now it's been sorted everything is roses. If I was Jose however I'd probably like to get a good amount of games under my belt before agreeing to sign players up to new deals.

Vertonghen, who has been of interest to Roma and Bayer Leverkusen, was also open to holding talks over an extension under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino - and he was told he was not for sale in the summer.

I make that 2 players who want to sign up now as opposed to 1...

But didn't the rumours say Poch wanted Toby out a long time ago? Stretching all the way back to the contract offer agreed and then reneged by Toby's representatives?

I want Toby to stay and think he will be great under Mourinho. But I don't really get the fuzz about this. If there was a some kind of breakdown between Toby and Poch, which is the impression most of us have I guess (?), then a new manager coming in, who clearly rates Toby, inevitably changes the contract situation. That's just football, no?

I hope you are right. Not saying he hasn't been immense for us in the past but he still has to prove that he is capable of reaching that form again as much as anyone does.

Their second goal last night I feel he let the Olympiakos player get away from him too easily. Perhaps he thought Kane was going to intercept the ball but still, it was his marker that got to ball easily ahead of him.

Once Mourinho gets his message and details across, you will see a massive difference. Each player has their own unique responsibilities, with a shadow player covering two-three situations. Toby stuck to his task. But the whole unit needs to gel in those situations. And I am very sure they will.

Not remotely disappointed if he wants to sign, as long as our young players also have a future, he's 31 in a few months and Jan 33. I love them both and hope they can get back to being a dominant pairing but we need a mix.

One thing I have always felt about Toby is he's very good value still being on his original contract, even though he's not signed I don't feel he's ripping the club off as it were. Genuinely shocked if we can’t find a deal for Jan also, he's an iconic Spurs player for me.

Still blows my mind how relationships between Pochettino and the squad seem to have deteriorated. Guess we'll just have to wait for the books.

Even if it means we get a better deal for them when they leave? They can both sign for any overseas club in a month as things stand.
If one of them was definitely leaving in the summer idm if they sign on to get better wages and us a fee.

But I feel like if they both extend they’ll both be here next season.
