I'd be more than happy to keep him, but with 2 years left on his contract it's probably the right time to try and claw a bit of money back on him.

I agree with the comments that if he goes we absolutely HAVE to sign a more experienced CB along with one of the younger lads.

Whilst Dier and Sanchez should both go before Toby. I can understand it will be difficult to move either on at a suitable price.

Ideally all 3 would leave but I will not be up in arms if either Dier or Sanchez stay for another season instead of Toby (providing they are back up not starting).

Toby is on the decline, I do agree he is probably our best defender but that doesn't say a lot when looking at the others. We need new blood in the backline and I can live with Toby leaving tbh.

Hope that we can see him back to Ajax. What a player he's been. Seeing Jan go, and now Toby...that's the end of that squad as we knew it. Sad, but exciting to see what we put together for the future.

He has been great for us, but I’d agree it’s a good time to let him go. I’d say the same for Dier too, but I can see Nuno keeping Sanchez and getting performances out of him.

One of our best CB partnerships was formed when he was with Jan, rock solid. Been a great player for us but yeah probably best for all if he did move on. Allows us to continue the clear out and get a bit of money back from him.

Absolutely need to get some experience in the backline though if we are going after younger defenders. Would love Skriniar as his replacement.

If he really wants to move on I think it's probably best for all parties. Wonder if he will go to Ajax or maybe home to Belgium?

We'll see how badly he wants to go as difficult to see the sort of clubs he may want to move to actually able to afford his wages. Assume we would let him leave on a free to save on wages or at most a very small transfer fee (but if we do that it means whoever wants him will have less money to meet his wages so bit of catch 22). Will he want a payoff to leave if his new club won't match his wages? Be an interesting one to see how it plays out. If he won't leave without a payoff then I would keep him around as a back up.

Best for him to move on to be fair.

Probably get one last decent move and a chance to play in the CL again.

I still think that we have sold a wrong belgian. Jan is one of my most favourite players ever, so I'm totally not biased :cautious:

Who's gonna buy him? If nobody wanted him when the buyout clause was active, I'm struggling to see who's gonna want him now.

Guess we’re hoping someone wants someone of his experience in a league more suited to where he is now, like we did with Jan.

When his buyout clause became active I believe he was looking for a step up.

Inter is a decent shout, if they are struggling for money, they will be shopping round for cheaper options.

Maybe Jose wants to take him to Roma.

100%. All I see around Twitter and here for the last few months have been get rid of Sanchez and Dier.

Both of them have contracts that run until 2024, and Sanchez was at one time a record signing! I'm sure the club wouldn't sell either of them for less than 30m, and I just can't see what clubs would be interested in them. Dier isn't HG either, so can't see him getting the English premium!

Although I will say Toby took a big pay increase on his last new contract, so should be interesting to see if he takes a pay cut to join a team back in Belgium.
I was about to say this. I feel like he got a big hike - who else would match it at his age.

Ajax? He could be good for top Italian teams (Juve, Inter, etc). Also, doubtful, but Real Madrid need to rebuild their defence totally, so Toby could be an option for them

Good points. I guess we could try to use him in a deal for someone like Skriniar.

He's on £150k p/w.

I think Van Dyke is on £180k p/w.

He's been excellent for us, but sentiment aside he's no longer worth what we're paying him.

I don't begrudge him it though, as he was also hugely underpaid when he was one of the best CBs in Europe.

Can see him going to Italy with their low tax rates for overseas players.

Good luck to him.
