Yeh but that's the point, we are unlikely to get a special player if we continue to fill the squad with just good players. We already have Johnson, Kulusevski, Solomon, Richarlison in attack, they are all good, the only attacker we you who you could argue is currently elite is Son. If it was Werner and another then fair enough, I just can't see that happening.
I see no reason why this won't happen. We don't have huge amounts of players to sign this summer. The issue is Soloman missing most of the season. We can't go into the season counting on him to be fit. Its ok to have him as 1 additional attacker but we need 6 players for the front 3 who can be relied on. Werner is a simple deal to make so leaves us plenty of time to work on 1 more. We did have that many attackers going into this season and we don't even have Europe. I see no reason we won't sell Gil and add Perisic already gone there's 2 spaces to fill.

Can't decide if he's a diamond in the rough or an old chunk of coal

His football intelligence is top notch but at 28 he's reached his ceiling, I'm not really sold on him and I'm definitely not sold on the whole "he's good value" argument, if he keeps missing chances it's not good value, and I'm sure we can find a wide player with his work rate, more no than yes.

You dont say no to a good deal because of the hope that you might find someone better.
A good deal gives you results. Hope doesn't.
Besides its not mutually exclusive.

Good scouting finds someone better, not hope, there's a lot of cliche to unpack here but if a player isn't finishing his dinner in this system then it's not a good deal.
No one is saying anything about hope, strange take.

The buy option is so cheap that it seems like a virtual certainty the club will activate it. I would be pleasantly surprised if it isn't activated.

'Someone better' is a matter of probablity. We might find someone better than him if we pay more. We might find a dud even if we pay more.

What we can't deny is that Timo isn't a good finisher (which we know from his time at Chelsea, so the scouts here wouldn't miss that) but other aspects of his game is good enough, and most important of all he is affordable.

I will settle for what's good enough. I dont think its prudent to chase for the stars at the risk of yet another Ndom.

I think that final line is incredibly short sighted, and odd, I don't want us settling for players, I think it's less prudent to do so. Not wanting to try for a better player incase we buy another Ndombele is a really weak argument given how good the scouting has been, and the different recruitment structure in the last few years, your statement makes no sense.

We are still paying Ndom today. The financial outlay on him is worth more than a CL win.

Yes our scouting has improved since Patrachi. Only a few guys fail to make the first team at all (Rondon/Djed Spence..can't remember who else).

I feel more optimistic about our recruitment. However to say no to what seems a sound deal (Timo) because of the chance that we may get better seems arrogant in the face of our past failures, even accounting for our improved scouting.

We are still chasing for a CL spot. Timo is good enough for that. Dont turn your noses up too soon.

A player who can't finish consistently isn't a sound deal in my book, I understand what you're saying but it seems contradictory to what we're watching.

There's nothing arrogant in turning this deal down, and I'm not 100% against it, but I definitely think we should trust the scouts to find a better prospect.

I see this as a very simple choice.
Of our current LW options who is most effective:
Werner, Solomon, Gil

For me I'd sell Solomon and Gil to keep Werner even as a back up option for another LW starter

Not including Son or Johnson on this because they are not going anywhere

I get that, but we arent a team dining at the top of the table and there arent that many elite options.

But it’s a case of then taking a risk on a young player and even the best young players are being tapped up by the big teams. Plus we clearly aren’t going to spend 100m on a players who a given, so we have to come up with other options. Even under paratici we haven’t really gotten our forwards right have we, Kulu has his limitations, richie just isn’t really good enough, Johnson may develop but again right now isn’t good enough. It’s very hard to find top quality wingers 1. Who bigger clubs don’t want, 2. Who would actually come to us, 3. Who doesn’t have bad injury problems.
Plus who’s to say we won’t sign werner, and a much more expensive winger signing? If Gil goes, with perisic already gone it basically pays for Werner? We clearly have a gap for a forward as I would imagine solomun will be loaned out to prove himself.
I understand people want to make these big name signings, and buy these very exciting kids but will we even play the kids?

I agree that a forward who can't finish is highly deficient, so I'm beginning to accept your point..

The guy has had 4 goal contributions in 8 games, some of which came off the bench. That's really not bad at all.

He went from 'sign him up' to not good enough quicker than it takes some SC'ers to put away their sticklebricks
I think fickle is the word! One bad miss in a match every single player was utterly hopeless in and the tide has turned against him it appears.

Not only that Johnson and our golden boy Son also missed great chances and at a more crucial time in the game.

We keep hearing the squad is too bloated, which doesn't make sense to me as we've shifted a ton of deadwood in the last year or so but I just don't see us signing more than one forward. If that is the case we need that forward to come in and offer something different, and be an upgrade on what we already have. Again this isn't a criticism of Werner who is doing a decent job, but we aren't going to be competing with the top 3 anytime soon if our forward line is exactly as it is now going into next season.
