Bergwijns problem is the team is designed to get the best out of Kane and Son, which is all good except it is asking a lot of them to be extremely clinical. My surprise on Wednesday wasn't him missing the chances, it was that he was even in those positions in the first place. He hasn't been in those goalscoring positions even against lower ranked teams. How many times is he given the ball where he is in a 1on 1 position with the full back? Hardly ever. Give him some attacking freedom.

Get fucked mate. It's an opinion based on stats. I don't even like stats. Why else do you think they came on then?

Fucking lengths some of you ****s go to. Jesus.

No, it’s an opinion presented as fact, based on the assumption (also presented as fact) that all Jose cares about is stats in relation to attacking players.

We all make assumptions, we all speculate about the reasons for this or that decision, but very few of us are arrogant enough to claim that our assumptions are not ‘an agree or disagree thing’. That’s what I take issue with.

Ok, maybe your arrogance just shines through in other ways. Keep safe x

You’re either being deliberately obtuse or missing the point entirely. What you see and what the stats show are 2 very different things. Jose has always been a stats man, take it up with him. I couldn’t care less.

Sounds like Stevie isn't fully recovered from his groin issue from earlier in the season. Worst case, might end up needing surgery in the summer.

I am one of his worst critics but I thought he had his best game today. However, he struggles to be an average player, so many chances and so many misses. On the positive side he but a shift in today and did get into scoring positions.

Is this the level of discourse we want to encourage on SC? In my book this is simple abuse.

That he was getting in such positions constantly and really giving the defence something to think about was very good. The misses, thankfully not decisive today but he needs one to go in so he can start hitting then with a bit more confidence.

Agreed, he’s doing everything right except the last touch. Really looks like if one goes in it’ll all come together.

Seems like he is doing everything right without scoring or assisting - which is ultimately how players in his position get judged. His first touch, his ability to find space, his speed and strength - all on point today, and I'm glad he was given a full 90 minutes, but ultimately he needs to start getting the G/A soon.

Players like Henry and Suarez have come into English football and showed good technical ability but became known for missing a lot of chances in their early years, before eventually getting that part of their game right and becoming some of the most prolific players in the world. I'm not suggesting that Bergwijn is anywhere near as talented as they were, but their early struggles show that if he keeps working on his game and his manager shows faith in him then he could still become a very effective player for us.

I’m confident this guy will come good. He’s frustrating at the moment, but like others have said he is getting into the right positions and working hard for the team. He’s already scored some massive goals for us too. We need to have a bit of patience with a young, talented player who has everything he needs to succeed in this league.

It's been quite clear that he hasn't been playing with the same positive energy as when he first arrived and I always suspected it was an injury. Sadly, he got this knock after only having been here for a few weeks and we've not been able to get him on the pitch for a solid run of games.

I've been banging this drum for a while but he WILL come good and contribute much more with goals.

He's coming up to a year with us, right? How long did it take Son to get going? And he came from a better league as well.

Yeah, I'd give him minutes against Brentford and Marine to hopefully get him a goal or assist. He's a dynamic player when he's on form and definitely needs that arm around his shoulder approach at this point. Can't have helped his confidence reading or seeing all those hate filled messages from "Spurs" fans after the Liverpool game.

It's only his finishing letting him down, he's doing everything else right. He maybe needs to do even more one on one shooting drills- it'll never replicate a real match scenario but his shooting muscle memory may hopefully improve.

He is getting in good positions which is excellent.

A soon as he gets his first goal the confidence will boost and more will come.

Only a matter of fine details with him, good to see that Mourinho believes in him as well.

I think it was José that pulled the trigger on signing him... We'd definitely been linked before (i.e. he was probably on Hitchen's list) and then we got him pretty much as sson as Mourinho came in.
