Just realised that the Asian cup is in January. Does that mean we lose Son for up to a month? Alongside Bissouma & Sarr at AFCON?

He needs to stay at CF. His best times with us were with him playing ahead of Kane if anything on the shoulder. When he plays wide he is too much of a team player and drops deep to help the team. When he plays central he stays on the shoulder and he is lethal. Can see him causing Van Dijk nightmares in a few weeks.

I agree with your points here but was also listening to Gold & Guest podcast yesterday and thought Aly made a couple interesting points.

He was saying how Sonny worked perfectly through the middle vs. Burnley as they wanted/tried to press us and wanted to be on the ball. He said that he could still see Richarlison coming in handy as the "battering ram" type striker vs sides that are sitting in a low block for 90 minutes and I tend to agree with that.

So while I think Son should stay central currently, it wouldn't surprise me against Sheffield Utd to see Richy back at CF, we'll have to see! Sheffield average the 4th worst possession so far this season.

Yes, at the same time. 2-4 league games and one FA cup. Possible season killer.
I think we're better set to deal with that than the midfield. Richarlison can go central, Perisic/Solomon left and Kulu/Johnson right. Not forgetting Gil and Sessegnon should they still be here for that period.

Yeah without Son, Bissouma and Sarr it will be difficult for a few games, however it is likely that Bentancur will be fully fit by then, we have Hojbjerg, Skipp and Lo Celso still in that midfield and with Johnson and Richarlison we should have enough firepower whilst Sonny is gone.

Our squad is not complete, however it is in a much better position than it was at the start of the window.

Had a conversation with a Spurs fan about how Son and Kane have combined for the most goals in PL history, but also that Son has always stepped up when Kane has been out of the team. Well, after his three goals at the weekend, I decided to spend a bit of time to find out exactly how good Son has been in Kane's absence over the years.

Son has started 65 Spurs games without Kane (34 in PL, 15 in Europe and 16 in the domestic cups). He's been playing as the number 9, but also on the wing when players such as Richarlison, LLorente, Janssen, etc has played up top. I have also included games where Kane have been forced off early due to injury.

Here is the breakdown in terms of goal contributions:
15/16 Total - 7 Matches, 4 goals, 2 assists.
16/17 Total - 14 Matches, 13 goals, 3 assists.
17/18 Total - 10 Matches, 6 goals, 2 assists.
18/19 Total - 13 Matches, 10 goals, 2 assists.
19/20 Total - 9 Matches, 6 goals, 1 assist.
20/21 Total - 5 Matches, 3 goals, 0 assists.
21/22 Total - 2 Matches, 1 goal, 0 assists.
22/23 Total - 1 Match, 2 goals, 0 assists.
23/24 Total - 4 Matches, 3 goals, 0 assists.

Grand Total - 65 Matches, 48 Goals, 10 assists - 0.89 G/A per game.

I suspected the numbers to be good, but the results are quite remarkable. With a new manager that suits his playing style, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic that he can have a really good season.

Great post, I love these type of stats, shows just how important Sonny is for us.

In my own opinion too many last season and this were ready to write him off!

How does that compare to with Kane? Be an interesting comparator?

Thanks for doing the legwork on this. I knew that Son had a tremendous record with Kane out of the team but it's great to see the actual numbers laid out like this.

Beginning in 18/19 we were playing really turgid football so, if anything, these numbers could potentially improve in a free-flowing Ange side. I think he's going to have an absolutely massive season.

A thing I've picked up on was Ange saying "he should have had 4" when he crashed Son's interview. Jose once did the same thing, saying "are you talking about the goals he scored, or the goals he missed?"

It makes me think that as good as he is, and as much as his managers love him, there's this underlying feeling that he could be a 30 goal a season striker if he had a bit more consistency.

A full season in the 9 position could see final form Sonny.

We had two world class players and now we have one. One is enough with a young, hungry team to do serious damage though.

I've no issue with Kane taking the spotlight most of the time - club grown and simply an impeccable footballer - but it did grate at times how easily dismissed the Son part of the partnership was, mostly by those outside the club tbf.

The way we are playing there will be plenty of chances. With Sonny in the middle a lot of these chances will fall to him. Invariably he will convert a high percentage. He is a bit of a streaky player so we should look forward to a few goals in the next batch of games.

Quick to squash any saudi rumours this summer also, going into yet another season of uncertainty when he could have cashed it in big time for what would be his last big contract.

The fans lapped up the harry kane one of own stuff and so badly wanted it to mean more than it has proved to, but Son is the real one of our own of the last decade.

Loved all three goals yesterday, right side left side and quick decisive finishes.
Actually would like to hear the one of our own chant for Son.

One of the most interesting bits of stats I’ve seen on here, thanks for sharing mate, Sonny really steps up when it matters.
