I'm more excited by this than Bale. It makes sense as well since we can recoup quite a bit if we loan out Sessegnon for some development.

Buyback clauses can be problematic down the line but imo we have to take some risks. We have to arrest the slide and start pushing for the top 4 again. If we quietly slide back into the ranks of tier-2 clubs, players like Reguilon won't even want to come to us in a few years time, clause or no clause...

CONSIDER THIS 4 -3 - 3

Lloris
Doherty - Toby - Dier/Sanchez - Requilon
Ndombele - PEH - Lo Celso
Bale - Kane - Sonny

GOOD LAWD

As much as I like the idea of this going forward, surely leaves the centre backs too exposed. The idea of a 3 at the back appeals to me, but I don’t thinks jose would be particularly interested in that.

Why can most the other top PL clubs play 4 at back with attacking full backs but we need a 3? You’d have Hojbjerg and Ndombele pretty deep and Lo Celso linking midfield and attack. Maybe Doherty wouldn’t be quite as far forward starting position wise but it’s a pretty normal formation comparatively to other sides.

Because we don’t have a real top class holding DM. That not what Hojbjerg is.

It’s why Zakaria is still my dream signing. A guy like that and the fullbacks and 8s have full license to bomb forward and we still can stay really tight at the back end.

It's certainly possible but usually if you have a top DM and CBs at the top of their game. If you have the likes of Kante or Van Dijk then it is doable. Liverpool have 3 workhorses in their side to support the attacking full backs for example.

I do think that midfield listed could work in some games once Ndombele is up to speed but I think I prefer the 3-4-3 with our personnel. I don't think we have the type of sitting DM that can split the CBs, I prefer all of our CBs in a 3 than a 2 (where they have high error rates) and Doherty is known to be much better at WB than FB.

Time will tell, I certainly think we could be effective with a 4-3-3 but it might need two runners and a creative to be more balanced.

Edit: Also there is a trend towards using 3 at the back. Lampard and Arteta have had some success with it, largely because of concerns over the CBs and CMs.

The buyback is unfortunate, but if this deal and Bale take us to the next level we’ll be able to afford a permanent replacement if/when RM exercise it. Hopefully a necessary evil on the way to the top...
