We're going to need to rely on Ferland Mendy having a stellar season, and him being happy here.

It's not so far flung. Really hope he stays, he looks great

Serious wheels, great attitude and looks like he knows what he’s doing and has the skill to do it. Early days but the signs are looking really good.

In what world can we offer better personal terms than Real Madrid?
I like the optimism, but when has any club, let alone our club been able to compete financially with Madrid? This is the main reason I’m relaxed about the buy back clause. If Madrid want a player, they generally get him, they don’t need a clause to take our, or anyone else’s players.
You're right, Real Madrid could clearly out muscle us. But it's unlikely Reguilon will return as a Galactico on 300k+ a week.

If we value him more than Madrid, we might be willing to give him a higher salary. It's not like they pay all of their defenders astronomical amounts that we theoretically couldn't match if he ends up being a key starter for us down the road.

Aside from Ramos who is reportedly on 312k-week, Marcelo is on 150k-week, Carvajal is on 145k-week, Varane is on 150k-week, Mendy is on 52k-week, etc.

Really excited to see him linking up with our starting group. Think he can be an awesome outlet on the left. What a character he seems to be as well.

Good signs.

Maybe he will only be here a year or two but honestly, can't say I'm that bothered. If it's a choice between having him for one year or not having him at all while continuing to play Ben Davies week in and week out, then I think it's a pretty simple choice.

Thing is, he's no rookie. He's 23. Will be 24 in December.

He needs first team football now. Obviously, the draw of going back to Madrid would be huge but he would have to be confident that he would be first choice there. He won't want to go back to sitting on the bench.

That's our best hope. And not an unrealistic one at that.

Marcelo is 32, he'll need replacing soon.

Apart from the first 15 minutes or so when he made the mistake and was trying too hard, he looked very promising indeed.

Will be interesting to see how he goes in a back 4, but I was impressed.
I thought he looked better in the last 20 min when we went to a back four.

Yeah and I doubt they'll want to go with just one left back.
But will they want to spend ~£40 million on a backup with (presumably) quite high wages?

Will Reguilon even want to be a backup after a year or two as our first choice?

I'm under no illusions - his dream is obviously to return to Madrid - but I think he would want some assurance that he's not just going to be a benchwarmer and barely get a look in if Mendy is the main man.

Who knows? Mendy may not be there, may not work out, nobody can predict the future. I'm not saying he'll go back, I'm saying it's naive to just assume he won't.

Ok yeah agree with you there. Ultimately it's completely out of our control and we'd be wise to just assume he'll return there rather than assuming he won't.

I suspect we'd be able to convince him to stay for the full two years if things go well. The tough decision will come when it's the last chance with the buyback in summer 2022. If he goes so be it, 45m euro is a decent chunk for a LB, we'd just have to try and find one with a similar profile.

My stance on the matter is that he wouldn't be with us at all without the clause and I'd rather have him for 1-2 years than not at all. Hopefully we can keep him long term (wouldn't be surprised if Levy tried to buy his way out of it) but no point worrying about it now.
