I must be in the minority as i can't stand Vertonghen coming forward trying to score imo he is too wasteful and holds onto the ball much to long.
Defensively though I must admit he has got better since Poch.
Played in Ali for the second goal yday. something I noticed was that yday even Toby made a couple of darts fwd and he has done that a couple of times this season. Sanchez, Aurier, Dier and Davies can a form a back four if Tony or Jan go Fwd
@thinktankRemember when people were saying Wimmer was better than Vertonghen, that was funny.
Personally I'd prefer our full backs doing the forward attacking play more and our C defender ie Vertonghen and Alderweireld the latter to a less extent defend and cover Sanchez, who I feel has been left to do a lot of the donkey defending.
I think Jan realises that Davis lacks pace and seems reluctant to run in to spaces as a result of this. So takes the bull by the horns and goes himself as a result of Davis reticience to be a wingback. My absolute favourite defender under all of Pochettino's time. Almost flawless. Vs. West Ham he almost made Davies completely redundant, it was like Vertonghen was CB and LWB in one. Maybe a thought we should exploit vs. Huddersfield.
Maybe? Then again, Davies did for instance score in the season opened after a successful run forward, so he isn't completely unfamiliar with the concept. And one could argue that it is a sensible sharing of work load between Davies and Vertonghen. Davies' presence allows Vertonghen to go forward and vice versa. But I can't help wonder whether it would be possible to field somebody else over Davies in certain games, a completely different player, given Vertonghens performance of late.I think Jan realises that Davis lacks pace and seems reluctant to run in to spaces as a result of this. Why when Davies is in the top 10 for chances created this year?Maybe? I'm posing it as a tactical option in certain cases, not a wholesale change as such. I'm unsure whether we'd need both Vertonghen and Davies at the same time in every type of match. Why when Davies is in the top 10 for chances created this year?
The system we play means that the full backs are always the spare men. This is because the opposition have become overloaded by are four attackers. This is easier to see and enact when you have pace in these positions ala Rose and Walker of the last 2 seasons. Until Rose returns we will have to settle for Jan marauding.I don't think that's the case at all. It's clearly a team tactic that when the full backs are marked it creates a direct line for the L and R CB to run into. Toby has been receiving the ball in crossing positions outside the oppo's box all season. When teams are sitting back both have a license to alternate coming forwards.
When we play against superior opposition I dont think your point will hold much water. We need the width and pace to enact our system. I dont think you can draw many conclusions when the opposition are Bus Parkers.I don't think that's the case at all.
