I’d take their reject in a heartbeatI think a lot rests of whether or not Newcastle sign Szoboszlai instead..
Messi chose the morally right decision and went to America rather than earn an obscene amount in Saudi.Maddison apparently has 2 choices
Join a club who have owners with billions to invest who are determined to win trophies and will at any cost (see what's happened in golf and horse racing) but morally you'd hope he'd turn them down due to their ties to an awful regime or join a club that operates fairly using a sustainable model but with owners that are happy to tread water turning over a tidy profit each year with very little interest in winning trophies.
One would hope he would choose the morally correct decision to sign for us but I've not seen a recent footballer take this stance and money and trophies seem to be the priority for them all regardless of the regime they're getting paid by. The Le Tissier footballer no longer exists. I'd be amazed if he chose us over that lot.
But he got paid fortunes for this...Messi chose the morally right decision and went to America rather than earn an obscene amount in Saudi.
Doesn’t him signing for PSG sort of negate that argument?Messi chose the morally right decision and went to America rather than earn an obscene amount in Saudi.
Don’t agree he’d be their main man and slot straight in. Guimeres(?) is their main man already plus Joeleton is a fixture in their midfield which leaves him fighting it out with Willock who’s been playing really well for them. Up front there’s Almorin plus Gordon on the right. So he’s no more guaranteed a starting place there than he is here except that as we are desperate for a creative player like him he would have more claim to a starting place.I’m not sure it’s as straightforward as them being up a ring on us, thought this view has validity.
I think he’d be a main man at Newcastle and slot in straight away.
We currently have Kane, Son and Kulusevski. Plus Richarlison.
I’m just not sure he has as clear a starting role with us. Could Kulusevski move more central and take the role?
Saudi politics and positions that were morally questionable by western standards are changing though. It is easy to keep that rhetoric and ignore change. Yes there is a long way to go but the Middle East are moving into world power territory with their oil money being invested in green energy and technology and with it a recognition to move some of their antiquated thinking. Therefore the moral issue will become less and less and clubs like spurs (who no doubt will be owned by a Middle East owner in the next 5 years) need to be a genuine option for financial or football reasons. We can’t on either right now so I imagine we will be recruiting slightly left field and hoping for the best in many respectsMessi chose the morally right decision and went to America rather than earn an obscene amount in Saudi.

Because FFP rules are much stricter than they were when City were bought. Newcastle won’t be able to get away with the financial tricks City got up to and so far have got away with - they still may get their day of reckoning . The other “top 6” are t going to stand by and let Newcastle game the system like City did.City were bought in 2008, Their finishes from then to now. City were Newcastle when they were bought, mid table and had been relegated a few times. Why do you think they won't follow a similar trajectory?

What a completely distasteful and unnecessary comment!is that a fact too?
Very good point! The original question was about recent players and this the most recent example.Doesn’t him signing for PSG sort of negate that argument?

None of this is to say Newcastle won’t be a force to be reckoned with in the future but I don’t believe they are going to do a City.
City are the only team in the PL keeping it on the global mapWhilst city keep putting the premier league on the global map, the PL/FA won’t bring charges to them, if they do, will be a slap on the wrist.
the money they bring in for them, goes beyond punishment, unfortunately it’s how the world works.
Theres also this or something similar, probably being brought in to stop them getting too big.
Just wonder if he might be looking for a bit more than that, he probably has an idea of what some of his England team mates are earning, if Rice gets a big pay deal with Arsenal , he might think I'm worth that amount.About £150k pw I reckon.
