So it’s mainly down to his price and the fact he’s come from a foreign league. Other than that have you actually seen him play live?

we’ve spent lots on high profile names like Tungay, Saldardo etc that supporters were creaming about on this forum and they flopped. In fact our biggest transfer flops have been large fees so I don’t really get your point. No one knows how each signing will turn out. You can’t judge a player by their fee.
I get that people want Raya and the HG element. I want us to sign him and will be slightly disappointed if we don’t sign him but I’m not going to be negative over signing another keeper that I know naff all about, just because he’s cheaper.
Problem solved we just need to up the bid for him to 40m and then he’ll be perfect for those that think just because he’s cheaper than Raya he’s rubbish.

It's such a massively important position to fill.

You are basically looking at the backbone of your defence for the next 7-8 years and it is hugely disruptive if it does not work out.

Not a situation to pinch pennies in - I really hope everybody at the club is really confident this will work out and we are not just going for the cheaper option.

Might just be that we have a specific budget for a keeper to allow other deals to be pursued and Raya is just too much and Brentford won't budge. We also need quality at CB and AM so it might enable us to go big on signings like Maddison and Tapsoba. I'm also quite pleased that we're showing we can walk away if there's no movement although I would have personally liked Raya.

If he looks just as good but is cheaper because he comes from a less wealthy league and a smaller club it makes a lot of sense. As long as we spend the money saved well in other areas. Get Maddison sorted and thats at least a good homegrown signing.

I'm fine with signing him, what makes me wonder is how quickly the club decided to move on from signing a homegrown keeper, not especially Raya.

It's not like we're any worse off, with Lloris for Vic.. We'd looked at Vic in January according to PoK.. so it's not a sudden shift and Gabb/Fabio have identified him so.. I'm cool with it.

Statistically this seems like a very smart signing if it comes off. Serie A viewers seem to rave about him.

Conceded the same amount of goals as Lloris last season despite facing a much higher xG (50 vs 31). He's also saved 7/16 penalties in the last two seasons. We got burned with Gollini but Serie A seems to have a good standard of goalkeeping.

The Jose/Conte era has burned me out on all this 'big club/big names/BACK THE MANAGER' rhetoric. What's the point of having a scouting department if you are only supposed to go after household names?

I agree that the stadium is there for us to be able to make some big splash signings but that doesn't mean we can't also be smart in the market too.

Let's give Ange the tools he needs to facilitate his style of play, we already have a good few top quality/x-factor players in the squad already (Kane, Son, Romero, Bentancur). We need to replace the deadwood and upgrade the problem areas effectively so we can put a solid and effective team around them. We're the opposite of Newcastle who have a solid team but need a bit more top quality. Currently they only really have Bruno and potentially Isak as true standout players.

Vicario, Tapsoba, Tosin all look like very shrewd targets and I'd be very happy if we managed to get them in. Add Maddison as a big name signing on top and we are cooking IMO.

There's a few highlight reels on YT that show clips of him sweeping up and coming for crosses. From watching those i'd say very good shot stopper (but not always careful of where he's parrying the ball to), pretty good at coming for crosses although sometimes appears to punch unnecessarily. Most of the sweeping actions looked pretty routine so hard to judge him on that. Considering we're going to concede loads of those situations under Ange that's my main concern with him. I guess additionally, another difference in the PL is that we'll play against more proactive pressing teams, and we don't know how he will cope in possession against those sorts of sides. Lloris, for instance, used to panic a lot and take the safety first approach to hoof it out of play.

I’ve watched some of his videos and understand some of the points others have made in this thread about palming the ball into the danger area, however, to my eye this guy looks like he has a lot of very good traits and looks incredibly agile for someone of 6ft4.

He looks a presence, and let’s not forget, he can be coached on his weaknesses and will hopefully learn the league quickly.

I like the look of him.

A good coach can get him stronger hands and more control over those parries i'd agree, but not sure about the sweeping. Always think that comes down to anticipation and speed, which are more natural traits.

I'm sure I'll get neg repped for this but this transfer is giving me Gollini vibes.

Can anyone reassure me (with reasoning) that I'm wrong to think this?
I haven’t seen a YT vid of him dropping bars 🎤, so be reassured that you’re wrong

Two descriptions that I just saw about him were "intimidating" and "commanding". If true, that's a good start. Was always Lloris' biggest flaw. And not sure Raya really fitted that bill either.

The best example of this is Nick Pope, a really good keeper but pretty lousy with the ball at his feet or playing a sweeper role. That however hasn’t stopped Newcastle getting top 4 this season, mainly because it also depends on the other 10 players in front of the GK.

Raya’s key advantages seem to be PL experience and Home Grown.

Technically, I am not seeing anything significantly better in his favour. Long passing maybe? But does Ange want his keepers kicking long very often?

So I am not sure those advantages justify playing 15m-20m more and I’d much rather that saving is applied to getting the best CBs we can.

If there were significant technical advantages with Raya then of course we should be coughing up what’s needed.
Raya is a terrific keeper, excellent with his feet, great shot stopper. I thought he was brilliant against us at the lane and the main reason they beat us. In my book he's probably worth not far short of what they're asking. But then we're a very poor club and need to scrimp on the pennies.

POK mentioned his name first when he said we pulled away from
Raya… even others have confirmed nobody knew of this deal before POK
Smacks of a tactical leak to me as a last ditch attempt to get Brentford to drop their price on our first choice before we move on and sign Vicario.

Nobody can convince me, that with a year left on his contract, he's worth what would make him the 4th most expensive keeper of all time
