Agree with you on the pre-season, however he's at the level where I'd like to see us go from him being first team to a great bench option based on having a great transfer window.
This makes a lot of sense, I put a couple of others in this bracket now too.

If he's willing to move back to CB again he could be very useful for us there next season with Toby leaving. Would save us shelling out big money on another CB, when CM is, for me at least, a far higher priority for us at the moment.

If he is insistent on playing in midfield I think he'll have to accept that he's unlikely to be a guaranteed first choice like he was in previous seasons.

Before reaching that conclusion I'd want to see how good he can be after benefitting from a full pre-season and even more importantly getting back to full match fitness, neither of which he's enjoyed for a very long time.

I don't want to fall into this trap of nonsense which people peddle out saying we can't improve our first 11, we should be looking for players we think can improve us especially in midfield, Dier with a pre-season and getting back to fitness can fight for his place though.

I saw a clip of his debut goal against West Ham the other day and was genuinely shocked at how bulky he's become since that game.
He was full of enthusiasm and energy in that game... these days he looks and acts like an extra out of the Walking Dead... ambles about and kicks everything but the ball lol

Of course we should be buying the best players we possibly can. No room for sentimentality. And of course he should have to fight for his place. As should they all.

It would be stupid to suggest otherwise.

I'm just saying that it's too soon to be writing him off in the way some people are.

Yeah, I don't want to see him as a first XI player next year, but unless someone came in with crazy money selling him seems silly too.

This year's been a total write-off for him, but his fitness record has been great before that, so as a squad player and strong personality it makes sense to see what he can do with a break and a pre-season.

Ah yeah, I think anybody saying we should sell him are crazy, in my opinion anyway, he provides so much utility and title winning teams tend to have this type of player, United had John O'Shea and Wes Brown as an example who were useful at filling despite their limitations as footballers.

I understand his thinking that he needed to get stronger to play in midfield and win challenges, but he needs to be quick enough to get to the ball first...

The priority in the summer should be getting him leaner while retaining strength, then maybe we'll see the old Dier and maybe he'll even get rid of these injury problems that he always seems to be carrying these days.

I think he’s been great for us, the injuries have messed up his season and now is probably the biggest test yet for him. Personally I’d give him aleast next season. There are others that need to leave before him

Always carrying injuries? The bloke had appendicitis, then tonsillitis then tweaked a muscle when he came back, as is often the case when players have been out for a while. This season is an anomaly, both for him and anyone in fact!

Exactly this. Over worked last year with the world cup and some unfortunate Injuries. Dier still has the capacity to improve and I think he will carry on getting better.

I wish we'd be more specific about what kind of issue was detected, if for no other reason than to avoid speculation.

Just hope it doesn't have anything to do with his ticker.

Eric Dier has undergone a medical procedure to correct an issue detected during medical assessments on the first day of pre-season training.

Following the successful procedure Eric will now undertake a short period of rehabilitation. He will therefore not travel on the Club's pre-season tour to Singapore and Shanghai.
Hopefully he will get back to his form from a few season ago, always a very good option to have in the squad

Was really hoping to see Eric back at his best this season fully healthy. Hopefully this won’t take a long time to recover from.

I mentioned that he was losing his mobility and therefore not as effective as he had been in the past and I was slaughtered.

Doubt this somehow as imo he has peaked in his development. As stated above he seemed to be going the other way. Unfortunate medical conditions and injuries aside, although not the same player, I still see him as a valued squad player to fill in gaps as it will be a long hard campaign if we are to achieve any success.
