Here's the thing with Romero, in isolation he is either great or poor. He plays on the edge and sometimes it comes off while others It doesn't. He made some great last ditch tackles today and then a couple where he was late lead to goals.

Thing is I actually prefer that to the players who stand off all the time. It's like he's an aggressive presser playing in a passive low block. If you have a team who are aggressive too then when he misses a challenge the next player comes in. That first goal doesn't happen if other players don't stand off for the rest of the attack. The 2nd goal was a mistake to give a free kick but also the wall should get up better and the keeper should save.

Basically he will be great if he has reliable players around him to help when it doesn't come off.

I’m surprised you haven’t blamed Dier for the two goals, that what usually happens when Romero fucks up.

If ever there was a player who needs a good coach it's him. The raw ingredients are all there, and I certainly wouldn't want to remove the aggression from his game, but he needs to learn when to be aggressive and when to stand off.

Thing is a great team of players bail each other out a lot of times. There's too many who make mistakes for us though, not just Dier. At least with Romero he also makes great challenges and has great games. Players like Dier don't offer much even on a good day. I think that's why Dier tends to get more stick. Fans tend to point the blame more to the weak links even if its not always them at fault.

Poor today, more silly rash decisions that cost us, needs to start learning from his mistakes, doesn't always have to lunge in.

If the rest of the team actually made an effective press, and if our midfield actually protected the centre backs, his mistakes would be fewer and less dramatic.

Yes, he needs to rein it in a bit sometimes, but he's basically our only player who's looking to snap into tackles and get the ball pre-emptively.

And by that creating endless opportunities for opposition. We may lack further up the field, but way he is playing isn't compensating it. Actually complete opposite.

I got pelters a few weeks back in another thread saying I don't see what the majority of our fans do in him. He's bang average imo

At the moment he’s far too reckless. He was at fault for both goals yesterday. Went flying out to tackle someone and thus being out of position for the first goal. Again went for a flying tackle in a dangerous position for the free kick for the second.
I hope whoever we appoint as manager can coach this out of him.

So far from the world class level shown last season. Badly needs a preseason after a long campaign with injuries and world cup in the middle. Think next season he will be back to his best.

I've seen him enough for Argentina and ourselves to know he has quality.

He does have weaknesses to his game and he does make mistakes so he is far from absolved from any criticism.

But if was going to list the defenders we have in order of who I'd want us to sell, he'd be near the bottom of this list.

Coach that out of him and there’s not much left…

I found an interesting article from the Athletic from September about "active" Vs passive defenders, where active is defined as defensive actions per 1000 opposition touches, as a proxy for a CB's tendency to get stuck in. Romero was the most active CB in the league last year, and Dier the least active. That's an extremely imbalanced combination in my view, especially as Dier is slow at covering ground and turning. Essentially if the opposition can work the ball round Romero's forward charges they expose Dier and he can't do anything to stop them. If Romero reigns it in a little, a more active and quicker partner alongside him would make us way more solid. Or we put Romero in the middle. He still has the ability to be an elite CB in the right system imo.
