We need to decide if we want to be a serious club or not. We always seems to go for the deals that are too 'difficult' until another club comes in for him. Sometimes to progress, you have to overpay. We are not talking like Romero is just an up and coming defender who had half a season under his belt, he is Serie A's defender of the year and just won the Copa America. This guy will be our starting CB for years to come.

Yeah, we don't have to spend big for Romero but can't complain if the likes of Harry wants to leave when we sign a bang average defender and the likes of Dier and Sanchez still starting.

Even if you blow the majority of the budget on one big CB, that's normally enough to transform a backline. We seen it happened numerous of times.

Yeah we might save money by going for other targets but at what long term cost?

In my opinion Paratici has told them that “no, we won’t go any higher” and then points to his watch ticking. It’s in their hands now wether they accept or not.

So at what point do you tell Atalanta "enough is enough" ?? do you really think that Spurs success next season rests entirely on this player's shoulders ?. There simply has to be a cut off point otherwise these sort of negotiations just drag on and on and we end up on the last day of the window scraping the bargain barrel again. A few weeks ago the name Romero meant nothing, now suddenly he is destined to be the saviour of our 21/22 season. Please let's not get too carried away with this and try to see it for more than it actually is.

I can understand those wanting us to overpay to get this lad (or whomever else it might be) in, but it doesn't seem as if we're in that type of scenario where the price is the price and we're trying to lowball someone. If there is any truth to Atalanta moving the goalposts after we match their prices, then where does it stop?

We match their current ask and they up it again by 5-10. By how much should we overpay on our valuation if they keep going? 100m? There's a limit in funds and patience and maybe we're at it.

But what are you suggesting?

That we keep playing Atalanta's game?

That we keep increasing our bid by £5m or £10m every time Atalanta move the goalposts?

That we end up massively overpaying and blow our entire transfer budget?

All that has happened is that we have apparently reached the point at which Spurs will not bend any further. It doesn't mean that the deal is off. It just means that the ball is back in Atalanta's court.
I doubt that Atlanta have moved any goalposts.... We hear this statement a lot when it comes to expensive signings that we try to make. More likely is that Atlanta's goalposts have always been set at the same level and our bids move gradually closer to those set goalposts. Of course there will also always be a trade off between total fee and how much is guaranteed and how much in bonuses along with the length of time tht we pay the fee over... Us offering £10m up front, £5m a season for the next 4 seasons and £5m more in any of the next 4 seasons that we qualify for the CL, plus a £5m bonus if we win the PL could technically be classed as £55m bid, though Atalanta will see it as a £10m bid with maybe another £10m coming their way if they are very lucky.

Romero seems to be plan A and B, but I like the way Parataci seems to do business. Spurs get a old school great quality CB for €50m or they get 1 or 2 potentially solid CBs in players like Tomiyasu or Milenkovic for €15 to 20m each. Personally hope Romero gets done soon incase Madrid decide to get busy replacing their departures, but lots of activity suggests there is at least a solid set of plans to improve the squad.

Other than shitposters on Twitter, there's no evidence to suggest Atalanta have changed their asking price at all. It's much more believable, based on past windows, that we've simply wasted the last couple of weeks offering rejected bids. We either pay the money or move on to other targets.

Yours is an interesting theory but based on what information is coming in from a variety of sources I will respectfully decline to agree with it.

The whole football world knows we need CBs. Quite likely that clubs will try and grind more money out of us for them.

If u have a dominating CB whos a leader improves the team hugely and they cost big bucks but the rewards can be far greater Liverpool spent big on VVD won the title City spent big on Dias won the title. Not saying we will win the title but a class CB puts us back in the top 4 imo and Romero has that profile

So when Herc has literally just posted, that Atalanta are doing exactly that - you think he's making it up?

If Atalanta are reading some of the posts in here about how we must buy him no matter what the cost then the price has just hit €80m at least

Love how this has been contradicted within Paratici’s first month

If the goal posts moved as often on the pitch, as they seem to, for us, off the pitch...we might not concede as many goals!
