Love the reference,I always remember opening day of that season, think it was Sky were talking Afonson Alves up big time after he scored around 42 goals the season before

Scored a brace against Man U iirc. Didnt do much else lol.

Jose on Carlos Vinicius
"I wish you ask me when something is confirmed and I have not been told that so far. I want to be respectful to the player and Benfica and maybe you can ask me this again later."

If we get CV and MS in then I think this has to be the strongest squad in terms of depth we’ve ever had (although assume there will be some departures to balance the books).

That said, I still think our first 11 from the 2016/17 season was better than this first 11. Still can’t believe that team didn’t win anything. Maybe if Son has settled and produced his form straight away we could have.

Only reason we didn’t was injuries. Chelsea weren’t in Europe and every member of their 1st team played at least 35 PL games except the wing backs (because Conte changed systems not because they were hurt). Missing out on Europe for a year is worth a lot of points - only time Man U made the CL under Moyes or Van Gaal was the year they weren’t in Europe. Only time Liverpool finished above us in 9 seasons... the year they weren’t in Europe. Leicester weren’t in Europe the year they won the title either. I will go to my grave believing we were the best team in 2016/17, just didn’t get the luck. That first XI was superb

Gutting isn’t it. If anything we just missed another creative player to unlock defences apart from CE.

I agree and maybe I’m biased but I still think that team would have beaten Liverpool in the CL Final too. Even when we got knocked out by Juve the previous year, I thought we dominated them. Dembele was an absolute monster, particularly in the away game. What an under appreciated player he was by most people (not Spurs fans or players who all say he was the best).
