Pavlyuchenko vs Berba

Firstly, i've just gotta say, although Berba has been a complete prat about his transfer situation, the constant sulking and moping and his defiance at not playing for the team that gave him his break in the Premiership in the first place...........i still can't help but feel a soft spot for Berbs, after all he has provided us with some amazing play and goals.
I for one would probably take him back in an instance if he suddenly decided that he wanted to stay with us, play his heart out and do what ever it takes!!..............but i fear i could be in the minority!!

Anyway, seeing as the Pavy transfer is almost done, thought it might be worth taking a look at what he offers over Berba.

(Bearing in mind, i haven't seen a lot of Pavlyuchenko, other than the Euros, Youtube and the England-Russia qualifiers :)):

Skill:

Berba: One thing we're definitely gonna miss - that first touch, Berba must have the best first touch in the game, he can pull that ball out of the air and control it instantly, then provide a great pass - plus, for a tall guy, he's got seriously quick feet.

Pavy: Looks like a very tidy player, possibly not as skillful as Berba, but much more direct (remember, Shearer was never that skillful)! Unlike Berba, he doesn't look like he plays much with his back to goal - he gets the ball, turns and moves which would work well with attacking support from Jenas and Modric!

Speed:

Berba: Quick thinking, but not amazingly quick for a striker, although those quick feet have got him around the toughest defenders.

Pavy: Looks really pacy, likes to turn and run at defenders. But certainly from the Euro's his off the ball running is excellent too - to keep up with someone like Arshavin, you need to be quick!

Shooting:

Berba: We all know what Berba can do in the box - he's got a good strike and can place the ball too - even outside the box he's decent, remeber those volleys?

Pavy: Definitely looks like this boy can shoot, both feet, plus he looks tidy in the air (noted at the Euro's as one of his strong points) - just imagine what he could do with those crosses coming in from Bentley and GDS!!

Work rate/attitude:

Berba: Less said the better i think!!

Pavy: Apparently, Hiddink has already said that Pavlyuchenko is one of the most dedicated and hardworking players he has worked with, always works hard in training and gives his all in games - i have to admit, having watched the England qualifier where he came off the bench and got a brace, he certainly was putting himself about a lot - maybe he had something to prove, but if he did that for us i'd be well chuffed! - Don't think he has a moody temperament either! lol

As i said, i don't know Pavlyuchenko so well, so if anyone wants to add to this list then go for it.

Overall however, i reckon we're getting a decent striker who could turn out to be better than Berba (fingers crossed)!! - the Prem League however is a killer, so i hope Pavy is up for it!!

Thoughts!?

i dont think you can compare the 2 as berbs is very unique there wont be another striker like him for a while unless pablo daniel osvaldo realldy progresses. it would be difficult for pav to be expected to fill in to berbas shoes immeadiately as berba settled in the side very quickly.

A good read, but, I do think you undersell Berb's technique, skill and creativity somewhat. maybe they don't make him twice as valuable as pav, but i'm sure they make him worth £10m more at least.

I think Pavy has desceptive pace. He's similar to Adebayor in this sense. Because he's so tall and lanky you expect him to be a bit sluggish, but once he gets into his stride he's rapid. Shame poor old Crouch doesnt have this ability.

It's very difficult for the opposition to get the ball off Berbatov

What I hate most about this whole thing is that it confirms our position in the football hierachy .

I'd like to believe that the club were willing to pay big money for David Villa etc if he would have joined and that Pav is not just a way of keeping the net spend down .

Interesting review - good work

I'd say, however, that shooting was actually Berbatov's weakest skill. There were so many times when he'd fail to hit the target with good chances, or strike the ball straight at the GK.

I think his spectacular goals made up for this, but also gave the false impression that he was more prolific than he actually was.

What he was good at, as we all know, was creativity and his assists total reflects this. But a 'fox-in-the-box' he certainly was not.

Incidently that's why I'm a bit surprised that Man Utd want him at all. I've said this before in a few other threads that Berbs is a 'forward' and a creator of chances, not a finisher of them. Essentially, he'll be playing alongside other 'forwards'; Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, etc. What Man Utd really need is a Shearer or Adriano or Ronaldo.

Or even Pavlachenko -

I've not seen a lot of him, but he could be a really decent replacement for us. We have so much more creativity in midfield this season, that a more direct striker could actually be better for our game than Berba.

Berbatov is a world class player no doubt, but sometimes a "lesser" player can be more effective.

well Pav is probably as good as we can get ATM - but it is of course a gamble

as for Villa all summer long (Trademark DC_Boy) I've been saying he won't come to us - I'm sure we could afford the transfer fee but for various reasons I never expected him to join

I would have thought Bale is liable to put in more decent crosses than either lennon or gds

What worries me is the language barrier, as well as what russians have done well in the premiership?
