Pav not going anywhere?

From Sky Sports:

Harry Redknapp has challenged Roman Pavlyuchenko to break the 20-goal barrier next season.

The Russia international has endured a difficult first year in England following a high-profile switch from Spartak Moscow last summer.

He has displayed glimpses of the talent which persuaded Spurs to spend big on securing his services, but has looked off the pace too often.

His last outing, against Manchester City on Saturday, saw him stomp down the tunnel after being substituted, but he insists that reaction was not directed at the club's management.

"When the press interpreted my leaving the field after the substitution against Manchester City as a demonstration of dissatisfaction with the decision of the trainer I was honestly shocked," Pavlyuchenko told Sport Express.

"I explained on the club's official website that the reaction was not to do with unhappiness at my substitution, but unhappiness at my own game."

High hopes

Pavlyuchenko insists the issue has now been laid to rest and has revealed that he is determined to repay Redknapp's faith in his ability in the 2009/10 campaign.

"We had a very long chat. Redknapp explained that he understood that in such a long season, as this one has been for me, there will be dry spells," he added.

"He made it clear that he has high hopes for me and said that next year I have to score 20 goals.

"I answered the coach - 'no problem'."

I know things always change during the turbulent transfer window, but this seems like a pretty strong hint that he's not going anywhere. Only fair to give him a full season I'd imagine.

Good news.

I would like to think we won't be shipping out too many players but also hope that the club has identified the wish list of available players and have made inroads to that effect
rather than being caught with their trousers down at the end of August again.

I think all the criticism of Pav is harsh anyway, the guy has played continuous football for 18 months so he deserves another season to prove to us that he is a good player. He has still scored a lot of goals this season. Pav show us what your made of next season!

I think that's the good thing about Harry. If you believe what he says then he has known for a while exactly who he wants/needs. I don't expect any fuss from this window if January was anything to go by. It might take a while to tie up one or two players but that seems to be the way of the market these days. I certainly don't expect any panic buys.

I reckon all comps. Although he should definately aim for league. Don't think Berbs got to 20 in league goals for us did he?

Edit: Max Berbatov got in league was 15

does this mean that harry won't be spending big on another forward and maybe concentrating on other areas?

I like Pav and I think he has potential but what I don't get (even after saying it myself) is what type of rest are we talking about? so what he don't sleep at night?
Its been reported that he's going back to Spartak in order to train for his international duties. So when exactly is he going to rest?

i'm sure we'll still be spending on another forward just given how many we've been linked to, but i think Pav will still stay since this is his first season and hopefully next season he'll have learned English and rested for a while.

Always nice to hear. I think Pav will be an important figure for us next season, even if it is as a backup striker.

Personally I'm praying we buy another forward . Congratulating ourselves on our good end of season form should not blind us to the fact that its our defence thats behind it .

I'm sure he would be looking to leave in January if he saw his chances limited to backup role.

Me too .

The prospect of selling guaranteed goalscorer Bent to bring in an unproven replacement to compete with the enigma which is Pav fills me with dread .

It's alright these people saying he'll come good next year but if they are wrong our league campaign could be over before it's begun .

I reckon Redknapp is being canny in an effort to extract a higher price if there are any bids .

I'm fed up with a number of people coming on here and saying Pav's poor form is down to his continuous 18 month run without a break. This mask / excuse does not hide the fact that he ain't good enough and having a break won't be the miracle cure. He is slow, weak and lacks any physical pressence in order to hold the ball up. Granted it's his first year and hopefully his last.

I'm sure there's a village in Russia missing it's idiot.

Is it just me who thinks that the main issue is that we want him to be a number 9, he certainly looks like one from a distance, but he just isnt?

In my eyes the guy is a number 10, a goal poacher. What you want is a Dzeko or a Gomez or a Berbatov alongside Pavlyuchenko, then you've got yourself a killer strikeforce. Being over 6ft tall doesn't automatically make you a number 9, and doesn't give you the all round ability to hold the ball up and bring others in to play. In my eyes we should be playing him at number 10 with a proper number 9 alongside, taking advantage of the fact that we'd have the tallest strikeforce in the league, but buying both Keane and Defoe has pretty much put an end to that, which is a huge shame in my opinion.

Agree with you to a large extent.

Yes and it seems that whoever we sign now automatically gets the new Berbatov thing.
