Giving the youngsters a game was a good choice. When will they get an opportunity to play a proper game. As the tournament goes on we will improve. The youngsters need proper game time to learn to win/lose. CCV looked oversized tonight. The whole atmosphere was low level tonight and we couldnt get playing and rise above it.

This is the line up we had in the away Europa League game at Gent and lost 1-0 and then went out in the return at Wembley with a different line up , unfortunately Spurs players are not motivated by the lesser competitions and do not have the desire to win, doesn't matter who the manager is all that matters to the players is their bank balance.

Lloris

Davies Dier Aldewerield Walker

Dembele Wanyama Winks

Alli Kane Sissoko

But we will still go through in the return against Pacos.

Ive no problem going out of this cup before the group stage. mildly embarrassing Id admit but even if we won the cup would it be worth bragging about?
It's not worth bragging about, but it's a cup we should be winning. We haven't won a trophy in 13 years, we're not too big for this competition.

Don't think a 2 man midfield or a back 3 suited those players. Hope for the 2nd leg we go 4-3-3 with Paskotsi at RB rather than Doherty.

Watched the first 35 mins but had to leave abruptly unfortunately.

First 10 or so you could see what Nuno is trying to get the team to do in construction. Thought we zipped the ball about fine, but weren't making much inroads unless it went to Gil. Understandable considering these players lack chemistry and experience. Even Winks was getting about the pitch and trying to take players on and move into space.

After about 20 mins they changed something and realised if they push up on Winks and stop the ball from coming into the spaces where Gil/John were dropping into, then they could win the ball back.

This is when we started to have a problem because Winks is poor when faced up against his own goal and in tighter spaces. CCV was all over the shop and didn't have the help from Doherty who was pushed up. Davies was tasked with playing passes into the attacking midfield area but his accuracy and urgency is hit and miss, mostly miss. He then retorted to longer passes to no-one.

Basically, the same faces let us down because they are unable to perform under pressure and quickly. They always need a touch or to look up first.

The younger players can be let off because its a tough environment to play in - against an aggressive team looking to cause an upset.

Lo Celso needs a run of games, his football has been disrupted so much since we signed him, it's still hard to know what type of player we really got. If he's still putting in these performances at the end of the year we can worry then. But I also believe this isn't the stage for him to show his best. He's given us some top performances in more challenging games, so he could have been taking it a bit easier or he could have struggled alongside Winks.

Sessegnon is another who is still finding his feet at this club. He needs a run of games to build confidence, form and chemistry.

The new boys get a pass as they are essentially still in pre-season with us - apart from Gollini.

The result isn't a disaster because I fully expect us to win comfortably in the return leg and we'll all forget about it.

However, we badly need a creative hub in this team. We badly need to ensure the likes of Winks, Davies, CCV and Doherty get nowhere near the first 11 in future.

But 10 days for Paratici because we need 3 or 4 players if we are to go anywhere, notably a CF, AM, CB and RB.

I'm not going to overreact about this game. For me it's the first competitive full game for the youngsters and new players. I also think we should have at least 3 first teamers in every game we play as they are the leaders to help guide the youngsters and fringe players. That leaves 8 players getting game time
In fairness there was Lo Celso, Davies, Doherty and Winks out there tonight all play in the first team quite a few times in a season, so the experience was there but they just didn't gel together.

I think I'll judge him when his CB partner isn't Carter-Vickers and he isn't being screened by Winks...
To a degree you have a point. But good players are supposed to stand out, and he did plenty wrong on his own tonight.

Didn’t manage to watch the game this evening. Reading between the lines it seems like we were a bit fart box?

Just watched Nuno's post match interview. He agrees we were disorganized, didn't create enough but acknowledged that the selection was intended to raise fitness level.s

Gotta say he's nowhere near as charasmatic as Jose, but he knows his stuff.

He said we need to find a way to fit Bryan Gil in. He said Romero will adopt quickly.

Was at the game. Got distracted for a fraction of a second, don't see them winning the ball and suddenly they are 3v3 on the counter. Somehow I just knew it had been Winks....

On the game: New formation (probably <3 days training) with a mix of players that aren't used to play with each other. Team had no processes in the attack. It caught me by surprise that we were playing with a back three. It is what it is.

Lo Celso is the closest to a regular. Winks, Davies and Doherty don't really get real consistent game time

Didn't catch the match and haven't found a player ratings thread. For anyone who watched, how was Gil? Where was he played? Also did Romero do well?

We put out a championship quality starting 11 against a team that the Elo rankings said is a top half championship quality side and we lost. Part of me is kind of happy that the math works.

Watched the whole game. Some thoughts:

We need to keep this in perspective. They finished 5th in Portugal and were not throwing out a bunch of kids for a run out. So, they put out their established team, took their chance and then sat back to frustrate. For them, mission accomplished. Really only 1 or 2 moments where they looked like they were harried. So for them, job done. The return leg will not be the same.

Contrary to some, I am of the belief we need to be playing in Europe. Every year. This team/organization has no clue/confidence/history of winning. Needs to start somewhere. Europe is very important as our squad is too large to only play in 3 competitions and continue to develop players and have all 17 - 20 players ready at any time, as is needed for success. Next game we go in to win it quick and early. Get to the group stages so that Nuno and staff can continue to allow kids to play in situations where they can thrive. Today was a learning exercise (for players and the coach).

On the kids, great to see Scarlett get some time. Same for Nile John, Clarke, Paskotsi. Scarlett is a real talent. Needs to stop whining about things (I know he was being grabbed and thrown about) and just get to the task at hand. You cannot be a player who wants to throw his weight around (as he does really well for a 17 year old) and then complain that defenders are doing it to you. Part of the game. Head down and push through it. I am sure he was super frustrated. No service despite making useful runs. He'll be fine. There is a great player there. Paskotsi is another I want to see more of. Nile John needs more playing time (loan maybe if we do not progress next week). He is not there yet (though no real help from those who should have bossed the game.

Super disappointed in the "experienced players". Winks and Lo Celso should have come out and bossed that game. They spent more time chasing and getting up off the turf than anything positive. Neither looked like they gave a crap. Winks crappy sliding tackle that allowed the decisive goal and his complete giving up after the ball was passed through tells you all you need to know. He is staying to fight for his place???? Really???? I watched every Norwich game last year that was televised, Skipp never looked that bad. Ever since he was called up to the England squad, Winks has been a prima donna. Not the only one, I could go on about 4 or 5 other players who just need to get gone. Here is not the place.

IMO, Winks and CCV were being given the chance to show they have what it takes - capability and fire in the belly. I will be surprised if Nuno needs to see more.

Doherty and Davies, don't know what to say. We need better. It's not effort that's lacking.

Way too early to be disappointed with Romero - he is just coming off of injury and is not at the fitness level. Yes, he needs to make better decisions. Very young and I have every faith that Nuno will coach him (look how well Sanchez and Dier played against City - I know - one game). Gollini perhaps could have done better on the goal. Again, young and will get better. He certainly has far better command of his box than Lloris. The long balls, I could do without. But then he was having to give the ball to one of CCV, Doherty, Davies, Romero or Winks. So, long ball.

Sessegnon (like Romero) is coming off injury (played with the U-23's the other day for a half to get some fitness in him), so cut him some slack. Yes, could have done better with Gil's pass, but surely we cannot expect sharpness and timing between two players who have been together a matter of days. Sessegnon got better and better as the game went on. Also was present defensively a couple of critical times. Lots of potential there and, as with Skipp, watched a fair amount of him last year, and there is a player there. Gil flitted in and out of the game. Unfortunately, he did not have a commanding MF behind him which does tend to suck the energy and creativity out of a player. He tried, sometimes too much. Same could be said of Scarlett. Clarke, like John, was essentially invisible.

All in all, so happy that it is only a one goal deficit. I have no doubt Nuno will make sure we go through. We know there are already 11 better players who will all be playing at the weekend. None of them has lost their spot based on today. I am not super concerned. Our three new players (all from other leagues) got a game under their belt. Two players made it very clear, they just aren't good enough and need to be gone. Another couple should be very motivated or worried.
