I’ve been castigated for saying this previously but I believe it’s worth discussing: our defenders are too cowardly. In Jol’s 1st 2 seasons we had a defensive record statistically worthy of 3rd or 4th place, averaging a goal a game. But last season this fell apart with 54 goals conceded almost back to the pre-Jol average of 57 goals conceded. The lost of King to injury must be a very significant part of this decline. King is made of braver stuff than the current lot. Our current defenders are cowards in comparison. For the second arsenil goal Kaboul was yards off Fabregas but still turned his back in submission to Fabregas giving him a free shot at goal. COWARD! For the third goal Dawson (great prospect that he is) was also a yard or two off adebayour, and allowed him to tee the shot up as if it was an exhibition game and then what does he do, instead of charging it down, but turn his back to adebayour: COWARD!

It’s not good enough for Spurs. No wonder other teams consider us a soft touch when the going gets tough. Sorry to have to say it but our defenders are COWARDS.

its not a coward thing to do its part of a human reaction. Get you mates to blast footballs at you from a yard or two out. The human brain takes over and goes for defence, you will protect parts of you body like the face from getting hit if you want to or not most of the time. They should have been closer but i wouldn't call them cowards

I would more say its to do with natural instinct. you see loads of players turn their back when trying to block a shot, BUT i did watch the Chelski Blackburn game and when Mikel struck an absolute thunderbolt, Ryan Nelsen stood up to it and took it on the chest which u rarely see tbh.

Watched Ireland last week against the Slovaks. Ireland almost won against the run of play only due to the bravery of Richard Dunne who got man of the match. Without Dunne and his bravery Ireland would have been destroyed.

it's a fair point. I would turn my back on my mates blasting the ball at me BUT if you paid me 20k per week + a win and clean sheet bonus i wouldn't!!!

The problem with the defence is inexperience in the central pairing. Dawson and Kaboul still have plenty to learn. At right back we have a player that can be the best in the league (and indeed was a couple of years ago) but is prone to switching off.

The problem is more in midfield than defence. Whilst Dawson should have got closer to Adebayor, no midfielder tracked Fibreglass.

There is an insufficient defensive screen in front of our back four.

Have to agree too - even though this is a contemptious subject.

Dawson let us down really with his woeful close defending. He should have stood up to Adebayor for the 3rd goal.

And as for ball watching when Sagna run down the right side to the touchline and cut it back into the area.....what was Daws thinking?

Was he thinking that Sagna was going to march all the way into the goal?

He didn't even look behind him!

It was comical defending to say the least.

I trust that he was just a bit ring rusty.....

Or it'll be bad news for his rusty ring.....

We must get better at defending set pieces - it has been too bloody long.

Still - if your strikers aren't scoring, and they waste decent chances then what bloody hope have you got?

It's time the players pulled their bloody fingers out and knuckled down to some hard graft.

I won't part with another penny for this club until they do anyway.

The poor fans who shelled out for that ticket must be seething.

have they not both just come back from injury, give them a break, they've not exactly had loads of games together either, once they've been given a few games i think they'll come good, plus robbo doesnt inspire confidence at the moment, due to the lack of his own, maybe cerny needs to be given a chance.

and as for people being smacked in the face they do need to toughen up and thats defenders as a whole, has anyone ever played as a 5-a-side goalie??

I am amazed that it appears that 1/3 of respondants believe that players are entitled to duck out of a challenge in case the ball hurts their pretty shaven thighs. If this is what Spurs fans truly expect from their players then it is no surprise that Spurs haven't won much in the past 16 years.

I can't recall ever seeing a certain Mr J Terry turn his back when a football was whizzing towards him.

I dont think its cowardice. As others have said, it is a reaction. The examples cited are if anything down to poor defensive positioning and not reacting quickly enough. For that you have to look at our defensive tactics and look to improve.

I think that the John Terry example is a good one.

I too don't think that John Terry would have turned away from the ball. He could have faced it down.

John Terry like John Wayne...big man brave man.

With a bit more bravery, l'arse wouldn't have got a look in.

It's not all Jol's fault.. the players have to do their part too.

But maybe Shelfspur is right:eek:mg:, it's all Jol's fault.

Firstly, defenders shouldn't need to turn away. Goalkeepers don't so the natural instinct can be overcome.

Secondly, that cross should have been dealt with by Robinson.

Thirdly, just wanted to mention one particular moment of bravery by Tom Huddlestone when he won a header upfield against 3 Arsenal players and left two of them on their arses. Top quality.

Centre halves need to be big and brave, not sure ours fall into that category, the fact that Daws and kaboul left Bale to deal with Adebayor at arses first goal, makes me think they lack some bottle.

One of them had to step up and mark him. He must have thought xmas had come early when he saw Bale instead.
