I get what you’re saying (I think), you’d like a Modric or a Thiago as an upgrade on Højbjerg. I really don’t think Conte wants that type of player. He keeps on about the importance of physicality in the PL, of what he calls ‘modern’ football. He wants two CMs who are allrounders, but with great engines, discipline and execution of his game plan. Højbjerg has some obvious limitations (when compared with a Modric or a Thiago), but he is over 6’ tall, he wins a *lot* of tackles, interceptions and headers and is a very progressive passer despite limited scanning ability and a reluctance or inability to be spontaneously creative. I personally really like the balance of our team and the depth to our squad. I think we will score a lot of goals whilst having one of the meanest defences, all built on the platform that is our solid CM.
Fact is, we simply don't play football in midfield. Midfield is where we win the ball, then we get the hell out of there, passing back or sideways, and every now and then forward. When we're in possession, you'll hardly ever see one of our players in the centre circle. If we ever go 3:5:2, then that would be bound to change, but until then we don't need a Modric-type.

Some rumblings on Twitter amongst Roma fans that he's agreed to stay and will sign a new deal in Sep/Oct.
Wants to play for Conte and from what I heard yesterday, it would take something crazy to happen for him not to join us.

And to those hoping it's before the Chelsea game, firstly I have no idea when the deal will happen, but even if it was before Chelsea, he wouldn't start and may get a few minutes from the bench but as you've seen, it will take time for him to adjust to what Conte wants.

?? it's all still on track and he will be our player soon.

So most likely bollocks then

Well at the very least, it has some basis - Pics of Zaniolo in their new away shirt is out today by Roma. May be it doesnt mean much - I think we will move on given we may not be willing to do a risky deal of 50m euros (with or without loan obligation)

Wonder where he fits. We would have Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison and Zaniolo as the attacking options which is obviously good but there was rumours of using him as a wing back. Be really interesting to see the Conte plan for this lad.

Doesn't really matter where he fits tbh. He can play several positions but it's all about building a squad. I've said it before but we need to start looking at it the same way teams like City do. When they sign a player, they don't worry about where the player will fit, they only care about having a strong squad. It's a lovely headache for Conte to have where he has huge competition for his starting XI. Whoever impresses most in training will play. Our bench is starting to look very strong, and that's exactly what we needed as in previous season, having the likes of Winks etc as options off the bench is less than inspiring.

Personally, when I see players literally bounce of Kulu at times due to his upper body strength and think about how intimidating that must be to opposition players, I can't help but think that Zaniolo is going to be equally as impressive and dominant.

And then you watch the highlights and see Højbjerg play a fantastic forward pass to release Royal who pulls it back for Kulusevski to curl it onto the far corner. Our CM’s play a lot of nice football and don’t get the credit they deserve. The team goal that won the game in injury time away at Man City last season … there was a lot of Højbjerg and Bentancur passes in that move. Bentancur and Højbjerg have formed a formidable partnership that will make it hard for the very talented Bissouma and Skipp to get a starting place.

Completely agree. They are a beast of a partnership. Key is keeping them fit as they drop off so much when tired. That’s the beauty of having 2 very good options on the bench when all fit.

Don't know where this WB stuff has come from and I've seen it posted a few times now, but if we can get it done he's coming in as a forward. Tbh I'm still not convinced it'll happen as the differences were still quite wide apart last I heard. Still trying though.

Think it was one of dragon’s updates in the ITK thread, but I can’t find it now.

The thing about this strong squad business is that it is what Conte is used to and is good at. One of his core skills as a manager is his ability to work with a squad and to bring the best out of players so that the team at any one time is the best that it can be. Not all managers can do that, but he can. Another of his skill set is the ability to spot players who will work in his style. I’d also say another of his skills is to be straight forward. I really rate Conte and I look forward to seeing what he’ll do with Zaniolo ? ?
