Lots of nice words from Sadiq Khan, best thing he could do for fans is to encourage TFL to operate a match day only service on the Victoria Line up to Northumberland Park, the tracks are already there into the sidings just need to install a single platform to enable fans to alight there before and board after a match.

Oh if only it was that simple...

Very simple if someone would stump up the money :)

Well yes, I guess everything coming down to money is correct at the most fundamental level, but saying 'they have a tunnel already, just run trains down it' is missing an awful lot of detail that stacks this against it.

That tunnel is a slow service tunnel, not rated for normal speeds, so you'd need to upgrade this tunnel and build a second for a return train if your wanting to keep the regular service levels. A shuttle train service sounds like an interesting experiment, although I don't see how say 4 or 6 Victoria line sized trains is much better than say increased frequency on the Greater Anglia line. Also telling that the article linked was posted before the London Overground picked up services to White Hart Lane. Which has seen larger trains and service improvements (and TFL weren't brass broke back then).

I think most importantly though, and the reason we've never seen a branch line seriously considered. Is that the Victoria line is the most streamlined P2P train line TFL has. They've spend a lot of money getting it right and now with services every 60 seconds in most intervals, it is a pretty good poster child for what the underground can do (new lines not withstanding).

Adding a branch sounds simple, but is a fundamental change to the signalling system, requiring a redo of the entire line, costing more money. And as the Northern and Elizabeth Line showed, new signalling systems are never as easy or cheap as they look on paper.
So once you've built new tunnels, a new station to cope with tube levels of passengers on matchdays, and scrapped and replaced the entire Victoria lines signalling system. You've spent more than a few hundred million easily, on an area that between Overground, Greater Anglia and local buses etc, has shown that it can cope with 60k football punters already.

As a long time resident of Northumberland Park up until recently I would have loved a Vic line extension, but unfortunately unless a Nine Elms / Battersea style development comes along , TFL ain't going to budge.

The question of an extension does go back many years even before that article , viability and cost were always the answer of why it was not considered.
As you say the stadium is coping with the existing links so any extension of the underground would just mean a quicker getting away time for fans not sure TFL would see that as justification for shelling out millions..
The projected Crossrail 2 through Northumberland Park would reduce travel times enormously but that project is way off in the future, Crossrail 1 is a fantastic line if its no 2 version comes to Tottenham then the area is really going to benefit.

Increasing the frequency on the LIv St/Enfield line beyond a train every 15 mins would be a great help for those heading south & Enfield direction but I am not sure they have the platform capacity at Liverpool St to do that.

Yeah absolutely. We moved into Northumberland Park in the mid 90s, and a possible extension was always brought up in discussions. MP's would ask the question, TFL nod and then reject it (Unless spurs paid of course).
Sadly though the signalling and modernisation works to the line in the late 2000's meant that the conversation was is longer really about money for TFL. The Victoria line was now a very reliable, fast service with state of the art signalling. TFL aren't going to break that up without an incredible business case to do so. And just like you allude to, Crossrail 2 has been hanging over the area offering the potential to solve all these issues for transport planners but sadly is another generation away at the earliest.

This mornings ticket sale at 10 am had a queue of 20,000 trying to get tickets for Newcastle & WHU games, wonder if the club might be tempted to convert the north mid tier into hospitality to bring more money in, not sure how that would be achieved when the away section has to be enlarged to 9,000 for FA cup games . There was provision for it in the original plans, extract shown below but it would reduce tickets available to members.

To the north the mid tier which in the west and east stands consists of eight rows continues up to level 4 with a resultant sixteen rows in total. This north mid tier has a tread depth of 850mm to be consistent with the tier to the east and west. This is to allow for consistent sightlines and also for the ability of this tier to be upgraded at a later date, if required, to club or enhanced GA seating, by upgrading the seating and the accommodation behind.

PS What about this tour of the stadium £115 inc lunch

As a season ticket holder in the North Mid Tier the thought of more corporate is appalling.
Every match I see empty seats in the boxes in the East stand (and on occasion I have been fortunate to be in those seats) but apart from revenue why would you want more.
This area deprives the club of vocal support and deprives true supporters of seating space.
Enough is enough, remember who this club is for

Sat once in the mid tier, front row, by far my favourite view of the entire stadium. Would be gutted to turn into corporate

said it before, would love the club to turn those 2 empty levels (behind the mid tier) into a 2 level sports bar, so everyday fans to use on match days and non match days. Screens, booths, bars etc

I agree hope it never happens but it was built in to the original plans, so you never know.
I can also see those empty seats in the east stand boxes , 4th level I think, who ever owns the boxes which can seat at least ten people only have five or so mates.

Don’t be silly - members are for a bit of fluff and to pay a fee every season for the chance of the odd ticket to a game

I’d imagine with 40k ST holders now members are even further down the pecking order + less availability would create even more ‘exclusivity’

Will be very interesting to see if Casement Park actually happens. Heavy, heavy opposition from many Unionist politicians to the idea of rebuilding a GAA stadium in West Belfast named after a gay Irish revolutionary. And if it does happen and Northern Ireland qualify, I expect a lot of the locals of the opposite persuasion would certainly have 'views' about God Save the King being played pre-match there!

Another feather in the cap for The Lane , suppose it will have to be a toss of the coin to decide which teams supporters get the South Stand.

After nearly 9 years at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club my time at the club has come to an end. It has been a very difficult decision for me but I’m looking forward to my next chapter and can’t wait to start my new venture.

Being part of the club at WHL, our temporary home at Wembley, then to the amazing stadium we are in today, has been a truly career defining journey. I cannot thank all my colleagues - past and present - for their support over my time and being part of a historic period which will never be emulated in our lifetime. ⚽️🏉🏈🥊🎤🎸🏟️

Special thanks go to my team, you truly are the hardest working and I’m proud of you all. Hilary Carver Emily SheridanCharlotte O'Leary Matt Webster Lauren H. Andrew Leake Margaret-Mary Dorrian

Also to Andy O'Sullivan first of all for giving me the opportunity but secondly for your unwavering support over the last few years during a very difficult personal time for me.

I wish the club and all my colleagues and friends the very best for the future. I hope the success on the pitch mirrors the effort and passion that I’ve seen day to day off it!
It’s been a great start to the season, I truly wish we see some silverware at the end of it. I’ll be watching as a fan hoping to share that success with you….

I wish you all the luck in the world 🤍🙏🏼

Bit surprised we're not lined up to host one of the UEFA club finals as well.

Isn’t it something to do with how far away the pitch not being far away enough from the first rows of seats or something stupid like that as to why it can’t be used. Happy to be corrected.

Haha really? The stadium has been designed so well it’s out of contention?

It is only for FIFA world cup games that the stadium technically doesn't qualify due to perimeter distances, pretty sure that UEFA did comment that the stadium would be considered for UEFA finals but not the CL final as that will always go to Wembley with it's leaking roof !!!!

7.4.2 PITCH PERIMETER The pitch perimeter is minimised to aid spectator proximity to the pitch. On this basis it does not conform to the FIFA ‘Football Stadiums – Technical recommendations and requirements – 5th Edition 2011’ with states 10m behind the goals and 8.5m at the sides of the pitch. It must be remembered that the dimensions set out in FIFA ‘Football Stadiums – Technical recommendations and requirements – 5th Edition 2011’ are only recommendations and are primarily set for stadiums to be used in FIFA World Cup TM competitions. This does not however preclude the use of stadiums in FIFA World Cup TM competitions that do not meet these dimensions. The dimensions in the current design are 7970mm from the front wall to the pitch on the west, north and east sides of the pitch and 4985mm at the south end of the pitch.
