Did an ITK say we wanted a left back or have I made that up?
It's been mentioned, but there is a distinction to be drawn between "want" and "will add if the opportunity arises". Such things can get lost in the passing on of information.

One thing to remember with Doherty is that despite the PL proven element he is a very unique player who plays in a unique position and formation for Wolves.
He’s a wing back without good pace (probably even a little slower than Davies), and isn’t actually primarily a crosser of the ball the way Trippier or even Aurier is. He isn’t great defending 1:1, and his elite traits are work rate, positioning, interplay in the final third, and aerial duels. I think he’s going to take some heat on here initially as he adjust as he’s been at Wolves since we had Redknapp in charge, and at age 28 will not be just tailor made to slip into the weird hybrid RB/RWB role in Mourinho’s system. His timing and give and go passes, probably his best qualities at Wolves, will also take time to perfect. So I’m excited but please, please temper expectations at first.

Sorry if it's been mentioned already but why exactly are Wolves selling their starting RB to a Premier League rival?

I'll be surprised if they don't bring in another Mendes client, in which case he'll get a double whammy of agent's fees.

Don't worry, us Spurs fans are renowned for being level-headed, patient and always give new players plenty of time before we write them off.

The friendly folk in the match threads will be sure to give him the benefit of the doubt. (y)

Agree with the majority of this but he is tailor-made for the RWB role within Jose's system, that's why he wants him. He will get so much space like Serge had due to the formation Jose plays and with Toby's passing ability, we will be a huge threat down the right. If Lucas/Bergwijn are playing ahead of him, I don't worry as they both have fantastic work ethic and will track back to cover when necessary.

Lo Celso could well play in that channel too and would dovetail nicely with Doherty's 'give and go' style.

There is something very strange about this one. Lot's of talk of them being in for Maitland Niles maybe that is a similar fee for a younger player with a (Supposedly) higher ceiling. Either way I can't understand why they would want to strengthen us and weaken themselves unless there is something dodgy with Mendes.

Even so, no caps before 2018 seems odd,not even as a sub.
Coleman was badly injured in March 2017. Doherty got his first cap a whole year later coming on as a sub for fit again Coleman . Did Ireland not have a game for a whole year. Love him as a player but is he a late developer?
Cyrus Christie was the established second choice for the very dull O’Neill team at that time. There was quite the campaign for Doherty to get a place in the team, even at the expense of Coleman on his return.

Get him signed tomorrow and maybe he can get a run out on Saturday against Birmingham.
Doubt we would even if he signs before then. He's just returning from holiday after playing in Europe and then he has a Nations League game next week. He won't play any pre season games and will debut against Everton.

I'm very surprised by this. Not in a bad way, just genuinely surprised that we're buying an established starter from another top 10 PL club that isn't in financial trouble.

Doherty's been a very good wing back for two PL seasons so I'm definitely on board with the signing.

Cant remember when we last bought an established starter from a top ten side in England.

Edit - Was Wanyama in 2016

Honestly think our right backs this season will end up being Doherty, Gedson, and if needed, Sissoko. I'd imagine if Cerkin makes the breakthrough some inside the club say he might then there will be games where Cerkin plays the attacking fullback role (or Sessegnon of course) and someone like Tanganga or Dier slots in at the defensive right back role.

I have nothing but respect for the way Serge has given his all for this club, especially in trying circumstances. I feel no need to belabor his very real flaws, though I don't think he has been the disaster some have made him out to be.

Just chiming in to add one thing I like about this transfer that I haven't seen mentioned as much. The way we have played under Mourinho, the RWB (in possession) receives the ball in some great positions. I have been frustrated with the fact that Serge never seems to take a man on--generally its either a cross or a pass to closest mid (Sissoko). Perhaps I am incorrect, but Doherty seems to want to be on the front foot and is not afraid to attack his man. I think the combination of his making runs, as well as running at the opposing fullback when he gets the ball with space ahead may really upgrade our attack.

If you type 'dodgy' in wikipedia it comes up with a picture of Mendes.
