I thought we were one of the most profitable clubs in the world and the richest club in London. Why would Levy and ENIC have to spend their money?
Well I'm no accountant but you only need to take a brief look at what comes in, and what we spend to understand pretty much everything that comes in goes back into the club one way or another. It seems to me you aren't looking at the actual numbers. There's a reason Arsenal are up against the PSR line and couldn't spend in January where as we aren't and did. It'll be interesting to see just how much room teams have left themselves in the coming windows and whether some of the clubs that have spent big the last few seasons have the ability to keep adding without selling first. I do think you are looking at the headlines and ignoring the actual numbers that matter.

We spend the same amount of money on more players. We haven't spent £85 million or above on a single player with the wages that comes with. We also sold our best player whilst those clubs didn't.
Our own club experience shows that spending big on individual players isn't a guaranteed recipe for success. Ndombele, Richarlison, Lo Celso... have they returned good value?

It's not all about buying expensive players, it's about buying the right players. Fans moaned about us going for cheaper options with Vicario instead of Raya, and Van de Ven instead of Tapsoba, yet look how wrong they turned out.

In terms of selling best players, it was the last chance we had to cash in on Kane or lose him for free. "Those other clubs"... didn't Liverpool improve hugely after selling Coutinho and reinvesting in Van Dijk and Alisson? I wouldn't be surprised to see them sell their best player Salah to Saudi this summer too.

Whenever we have been in the EL we have struggled with the Thursday EL to Sunday PL turnover. Games tend to be spread out a lot further around Europe then the CL. Given the intensity of football we are playing now that hangover could be even greater. That plus the revenue and glitz the CL brings. Player do still want to play in it and it does still help with recruiting to some degree. Yes we might have a greater chance of winning the EL but we have said that for years and yet the only European final we have actually managed to get to in recent memory is the CL. Oh and the Audi cup i guess we won...

Absolutely, but that isn't the discussion we have been having.

I've seen it suggested a few times by different posters that they'd prefer for us to be in the lesser competitions because they are easier to win and we'd have more chance of doing so, and that's what I am arguing against. If that's where we end up then we absolutely should try and win them, but we should be doing everything we can, to finish as high as we possibly can, to compete in the best competition that we can the following year.

You're arguing against a difference of opinion though.

No one has categorically said they don't want us to compete in the UCL, and I said in my original post that it would benefit the project in the long run by giving us the best chance to actually win something by competing in the EL.

Winning a competition, whether its the Carabao or all the way up to the UCL, will make a huge difference to everyone involved with the club from the players to the fans and everyone in between.

It shows we actually have the ambition to achieve something meaningful and not just show up to compete.

Even if the probability of us winning either competition (UCL vs EL) is only a 5-10% difference, I know which option I'm taking. We need to win something for a change.

If we are truly in a rebuilding phase, why not Win a trophy first and then progress into tougher competitions rather than merely competing and achieving nothing at the end of the season.

Keep in mind that my opinion is based on the probability of success in each competition on paper, and I understand that the game doesn't always follow the numbers.

Because Levy, or something like that.

Cheap shots with little basis on reality are the best shots to take.

Like when we got UCL and gave Conte a 4th choice Barca LCB on loan and a championship RWB.

Or when we gave Arry, Nelsen and Saha.

Or when Poch didnt get his first choices....

It's amazing that we weren't relegated tbh. :cautious:

@alfie103 and @YB123 making this thread a joy today ;) guys go to the ENIC/Levy threads if you want to debate spending.

This thread is about our current fantastic manager Ange.

Getting it back to topic, I personally loved in the presser after the Fulham game when the journos said to Ange is it one step forwards 1 step back and was this result disappointing and is it 1 step forward with the villa win and 1 step back with this loss and he bit back and said firstly it is 4 steps forward 1 back not 1 forward 1 back and that was the first time all season we've had a game like that and then he went on to say "its a disappointing day but its part of our growth, it happens to the best teams in the world, it happened to us and we have to learn from it and move on"

No bs, no excuses, no emotional meltdown, no blaming the players or the referees or the wind or the board or anything, just simply owning up that it wasn't good enough but it happens and we learn and move on from it and that it is part of our process of learning and growing.

Such a rock solid mentality in victory and defeat from Ange, honestly wouldn't want anyone else representing or managing our club. Keep backing this man and I'm confident he has as good a chance as any manager of bringing us success.

Last couple of pages have made me realise that I suddenly find myself more on the 'DL/ENIC are alright really' side of the debate now.

How TF did this happen?

Back on track. I hope Ange gets a full 3 seasons at least, barring a disastrous flirtation with the bottom 3 that is.

So Ange can talk the talk. Good to know for when they start awarding trophies for great press conferences.

So, now have a good feeling who will be starting the Ange out brigade, based on the folks disagreeing that our loss was down to player intensity rather the coach’s apparent naivety.

Oy vey.

Genuinely think for some they feel that something isn't right unless we should be pushing another coach out the door and getting another in

For the record, I am not one of those who thinks we should be pushing Ange out the door. I am fed up of changing manager every 16 months. Ange has not had enought time yet to prove one way or the other if he has what it takes to make us truly competitive. None of us know if he has it or not, but he deserves time to erase any doubt.

Unless we are in freefall (mid table or lower) then he should be given at least three full seasons.

Poch was 5th in his first season and then went 3rd, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Bigger picture, his personality and honesty shines through, the lack of bullshit makes it far more likely Levy trusts him.

There are threads about the board for these tired, generic complaints about Levy and ENIC.

It all relates back to Ange. We are hardly going to talk about his physical features or what he has for dinner.

Anything Transfer related, or Levy related will play significance and a link to Ange.

Want to add I'm a massive Ange fan and hope he gets backed FULLY, not half fully like many others. He's been great for this club and we've been competitive in every single game bar Fulham. The way we play was always going to lead to 1 or 2 freak results when we were way off it. The overreaction to Ange's tactics ever have been ridiculous.
