Liverpool Signed Downing Because of a fake video

ASTON Villa banked £20 million for star winger Stewart Downing – after Liverpool FC bosses were fooled by this FAKE footage of the England man’s skills.

The Anfield club’s top brass vowed to sign Downing after being dazzled by YouTube clips of him kicking balls into five wheelie bins from long range.

“There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant,” said chairman Werner.

“John and I said: ‘Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.”

But American duo John Henry and Tom Werner only later realised that the footage had been digitally enhanced as part of a viral video campaign to boost season ticket sales at Villa.

The doctored Downing footage was the handiwork of video expert Nick Finney and other members of Villa’s media and marketing team.

If it was to do with stats then it probably came from the owners. When John Henry took over the Red Sox he implemented the use of statistics to create teams the Moneyball way, as seen in the movie Moneyball.

However, the lasting impression was on Levy who applies the money side of moneyball to transfers.

Comolli was more into moneyball for the sabermetric aspect of finding a new way to gauge a player with stats. Works better in baseball. Henry actually hired Comolli because of Beane and Theo Epstein, his then director for the Red Sox.

it's not so much about WHO they signed,... it is HOW MUCH they paid. fake videos are just banter, but 35 mil for carroll, 20 for henderson, etc

Personally if I'd signed Downing I think I'd rather have people believe I did it on the basis of a fake video rather than I thought £20 mill was a good deal based on his playing achievements.
