Why should we support in a time when the daily new number of cases is at its highest all year? I don't want fans to go to one-two-three matches and have a major backlash of a nationwide tier three lockdown. Fans will be let in when it's safe. It's clearly not safe when the infections numbers are already high without fans in the stadium.

Can we add a poll to this thread? Something like:

"Would you attend live matches, if allowed, within the next few months?"

Yes
Yes, but only if they allow a limited capacity of fans

No

It'd be really interesting to see the current sentiment from fans on this. I personally wouldn't go until the virus is properly suppressed in the community. I'm an anxious sort, though.

Really, it doesn't matter what people "want". Boris wants a lovely Christmas dinner with all his extended family (maybe he can hire the stadium for that :p). He's not getting it. They've fucked it right up and anyone clamouring to go back right now is an idiot.

Agree with all of that.

I think I probably just want to know how many of those idiots we have on here :D

So you can stand in a crowd on a train going to work or queing to the supermarket but you can't stand outside watching a game of football - its a nonsense

If they reported persons lost years and not deaths is a meaningful stat -

its kind of implicit- people are not asking for 70,000 people but you have people watching in most of Europe albeit small crowds why not the UK

You really think everyone is singing and chanting in the supermarket queue? Maybe at Aldi, but certainly not at Waitrose :p

Singing and chanting? like a moan but I don't condone that sort of behaviour

I personally wont go to games for a while however i do think the government should relax the rules somewhat perhaps 15-20% of the stadium, certainly not 50%.

As annoying and frustrating as it is.

You need to get to work, you need to go to the supermarket. Its essantial to keep your life going and therefore worth the risk of allowing it.
I know there are ltos of companies and jobs involved in Matchday football but to be honest aside from them: No one needs to go to a football match. Its mostly just your private entertainment so it is not okay to compare it.

To be fair, part of the daily case numbers is an increase in testing. It's widely agreed that numbers during April were far higher than they are currently and the relative lack of testing was not revealing the true picture.

But I think you're sentiment is the correct one. Why let fans watch football games live (with the travelling and lack of distancing that involves) when things are not quite under control.

There are other issues as well.
Is it fair to allow fans to attend a Spurs game but not attend a Leicester game because they have a local lockdown?
If a local lockdown gets introduced shortly before a game who should pay for refunding the purchased tickets?
How can you justify the additional medical/police staff needed to attend games?
How can you justify the spike in use of public transport for something that is non-essential?

I'm obviously hoping that we can allow fans back in - especially since we have the kind of stadium where it would be possible to have some form of responsible behaviour. If this 90 minute test thing comes to fruition perhaps we could even sell the idea of a football match being a prime opportunity to do some mass testing of the population? But it doesn't seem like it will be a fair solution if the rules cannot be matched across all teams in the league.

This is where I'm at, I think.

When cases are on the rise it would be madness to reopen stadiums. Especially when the government‘s privatised test and trace system is performing so poorly.

As much as we all went things back to normal, it’s just not going to be sensible to do this kind of thing yet. Frankly we will all be lucky if we don’t go into a national lockdown again before the end of the year.

While it's true that there were more cases in April:
  • Part of the real number of new cases is missing from the current daily totals, due to a continued lack of testing - capacity is maxed out.
  • The proportion of tests returning a positive result is currently increasing (not just the total number of positive tests)
  • The number of cases requiring treatment and hospitalisation is currently increasing.
  • The number of deaths is currently increasing.
  • Whether we are at the same levels as in April is fairly irrelevant - the pressure on our healthcare system is currently increasing, so measures need to be in place to control this, to avoid it becoming unmanageable.

I agree with you but the argument is that there are people allowed to go to pubs, go shopping in the city, go to the cinemas and theatres, all of those having to use public transport anyways. Most of that stuff is not essential but the government are allowing it, so why not football?

Spectators at live events really doesn't make sense at the moment. The only issue I have with the government's restrictions on spectators at elite sports events is that consistent restrictions should be in place for cinemas, theatres, pubs etc.

Frankly if I don’t have to sit next to some of the miserable racist knobs at matches then this can only be a good thing. I just hope my wife understands that she can’t come anymore.

That would allow Arsenal to have their usual attendance :ROFLMAO:
