Reading manager Brian McDermott has confirmed that the club will end the loan spell of Bongani Khumalo this month if they bring in transfer target Karleigh Osborne from Brentford.

Khumalo has had a miserable time at the English Championship side and has not played since August, with McDermott making it clear that the Bafana Bafana international was not in his plans.

The former SuperSport United star might be left with just a matter of days to find regular first-team football if the deal does go through.

Although the transfer window slams shut on January 31, teams from outside the English Premiership can loan players from that division if they sign them between February 8 and March 24.

Khumalo might have thought that Reading’s decision to loan defender Seam Morrison to Huddersfield might open up an opportunity for him, but McDermott is eager to look elsewhere.

"Morrison has gone on loan to Huddersfield so there's a possibility we might bring Karleigh Osborne to cover,” McDermott told the Reading Chronicle. "It's a not a loan, we would just take him. Bongani will go back to Spurs and we have to cover the Sean Morrison situation until the end of the season."

It is a nightmare scenario for both the player and Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, who has used Khumalo sparingly while he has not been playing at club level, but would be eager to have him match fit and firing with the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers starting in June.

Seriously dont think his guy will make it at spurs

He will become a decent championship player at worst imo.

At best a decent prem player probably.

Coloccini and Enrique were written off after Newcastle got relegated, both look good now.

Yeh but those two struggled in the Prem initially, had a good season in the Championship and then looked much better second time round in the top league. Khumalo on the otherhand cant even get a game at Reading in the Championship, thats how little he has impressed.

A loan to a Premiership club would be best for him - I often think it's actually harder to defend in the Championship, where the gulf between teams can be huge in terms of quality, and games can often be real end-to-end affairs and are generally higher-scoring than those in the Premiership.

I would've thought a team like Wigan or Bolton would've been interested in a half-season loan.

He's been long term injured and cant get game time to replace the two who have performed to date.

He is utter shit.

My Reading supporting family have watched him and said he is so bad he would not even get into the God awful team they had when Tommy Burns was in charge.

I'm still baffled why we have such a link, we already have one of the countries top players in pienaar, so we don't need them for exposure, and i'm not convinced they are ever going to produce a player good enough to cement a place in our team. Time to call it a day with them i think.

I doubt you know much about the politics of South Africa then.

This is long term and it will work.

Signed to give him a chance through our partnership with SS United.

Small fee paid, no great loss. Will most likely leave in the summer.
