Whoever mentioned defensive frailties is watching a different player. Strangely enough he seems to do well at tackling, intercepting and tracking back. Please remember how long it took ronaldo and bale, both of whom are now world class.
The problem is that Ronaldo and Bale always had the physical qualities necessary to succeed in the Premiership. They were (are) strong and fast. They obviously had a wonderful right/left foot. They just needed time to mature as men and learn the league.
I worry that Lamela lacks the basic ingredients necessary to succeed. I am not saying you have to be strong and fast - but it certainly helps! And if you are not, and you want to be a world class attacker, then you really have to have something special about you (think Suarez). I am not sure that is something that necessarily evolves over time. I think that star quality; that genius is always there to be seen. And to my mind you see far more if it in, say, Eriksen than you do in Lamela.
It doesn't help that we are crying out for some speed and power in attack - so Lamela makes things worse rather than better in that respect.
I understand the desire to give him a chance. But I have seen absolutely nothing, other than a Rabona, to suggest he has either the physical or footballing qualities to make it (and I mean, really make it).
