Meh. We keep more clean sheets when he plays then when he doesn't. he visibly buoys the team up when the heads are down. If he gets a decent consistent partner (hopefully Kaboul) he'll be our captain for another 5 years at least.

Dawson is an OK CB, nothing more. I sure hope he's not the future of our defence.

He's had a kind of stop start season this year but are you forgetting his performances last year? He didn't get player of the season for being sh1te. He's a proper no nonsence old fashioned CB who I think is as good as john terry. I for one are very happy he's at our club.

These things can all be said about John Terry and he's played in a top team for years. We let in less goals with Dawson in the team, anyone that doubts this can simply cast their mind back to the first half of the season. We haven't kept a clean sheet without him.

There is more at play in a defender than just technical ability and naming times when he's switched off to show he is shit is foolish.

Luiz and Vidic have both made mistakes recently. Are they shit? It would be like highlighting times when Tevez fluffs a shot and using as evidence he is cack.

Dawson IS awesome. And its a ridiculous argument to say King and Woodgate are better than him cos they're not. A long long time ago in the faraway they were but now they are just bed blockers.

It's not ridiculous to argue that if fully fit King and Woodgate are better. Because quite possibly, if neither had been injured like they are they would be the best two English centre backs to have ever graced the game. Thats EVER, not just good, or awesome, but best EVER.

Dawson is an excellent CB, and an excellent captain. King and Woodgate are no longer serious contenders because we need consistency, and they can't give us that anymore.

It's fun to play the what if game, like what if Berbatov never left...but it is useless. Dawson had an opportunity and has taken it in my mind.

He is like Terry or Puyol; their raw attributes suggest that they're not THAT good, but every manager loves them, they organise the defence and get in the way of everything.

As Daws has matured his use of the ball has gotten a lot better as well. I'm a big fan of ball playing centre-backs, but Dawson has his place, and he and Kaboul will be a very good partnership for years to come IMO.

This is what I was getting at, I think the modern game has shown that you have a blood and thunder defender playing beside a more cultured player.

Vidic & Ferdinand
Terry & Carvaliho/Luis
Dawson & whoever is fit

We've done this clean sheet argument to death. It's bogus. Meaningless. And no one has ever managed to offer any evidence as to why this is anything other than a coincidence or a stat attributable to any of the other many, many variables involved in keeping a clean sheet.

A player can play shit and we keep a clean sheet or he can play great and concede 3. Unless you can provide anecdotal evidence to support why player "a" has individually, single handedly created the clean sheet then it's meaningless drivel.

What's a better result, winning 3-2 against Arsenal away or drawing 0-0 against ManU at home ?

If Dawson had played would he have scored the winner like Kaboul - who was also defensively superb that day - as was Gallas.

And I have never seen any discernible, tangible evidence of Dawson's supposed leadership skills. He's usually way to busy trying not to fuck up to be concerning himself with barking orders, organising, cajoling or geeing.

I have on occasion seen him talk to his fellow CB, but I have never seen him do anything overtly leader like. Never seen him tell Gomes not to chuck a silly one, or berate a fellow player for not closing down, or bark at Pav for being a wimp, or telling Lennon he's got to help his FB, or geeing up those around him with encouragement or clenched fisted gestures.

How is this fabled leadership manifesting itself ?

As all the other stuff - mentioned in the article and by me many times - wasn't enough to make you question why you love him so much, doesn't the cup game against Fulham just nail the question home. Or the week before against Newcastle away ? Why the fuck wouldn't you want a better CB playing for your club. You've had four here in the last three years, so you know they exist. Why isn't he hated as much as Jenas, who has never ever come close to being as bad as Dawson on a bad day.

I just do not understand why you adore this player.

are those the attributes of the finest captains ever then?? Sounds like you're describing Roy Keane, who was a great captain..but I'm sure other greats to have worn their respective countries/clubs arm-bands who have applied a different approach.

Steve Perryman, Bobby Moore, Paddy Vieira...never made a name for themselves by being the "Blood & Thunder, Up & At Em" type captains.

The clean sheet argument is a decent guide to his worth to the team, but maybe it's more to do with stability of a CB pairing. And Dawson is part of the regular CB spots.

Good points re clean sheet stats but i'll put the rest of your comments in the "what the fuck?" pile... You've got a fair amount of stuff in there now!:)
