What's new

Is a back up/rotation striker now our only real priority for January?

Yes maybe although still think we could do with more midfield creativity, imo we still have that are a like but other than that we are taking shape.

Pretty much. I'd still feel a lot more comfortable if we were able to bring in another quality DM or creative midfielder, but if Dier continues to play as he is I think a squad player would be okay (as opposed to spending £25m on someone like McCarthy).

I think it is. It's now about keeping these kids together and developing them as a unit.
I think this is spot on. The aim for January has to be to bring in Berahino who Pochettino rates and ship out the last few who do not suit the system and therefore need to go (Fazio, Dembele and possibly Chadli). Then we should aim to keep this squad together for 18 months without additions and see what Pochettino can do

I think we need a back up/rotation DM as well. Who plays when Dier is injured/needs resting? We have plenty of options in CM but no one else who will shield the defence effectively.

Tough one. In terms of 'priorities', I would agree that another Striker is the only thing that is absolutely necessary.

Other positions are dependant on the future of Dier.

If Dier remains a DM, then maybe we will need another CB in the future as we just can't keep Fazio. Saying that, I think and hope CCV is good enough so that won't be necessary. Also, we will need a back-up DM IMO, as it looks like Veljkovic doesn't have a future here.

If Dier is re-converted to a CB, then we need a starting DM. At this moment in time, that's not necessary at all.

So I think we NEED a striker in January, and maybe a DM of some description (starting or back-up), but I'm not sure that's a priority.

In terms of the striker, I have a feeling that we won't try again for Berahino, as Pulis guessed, and if that is the case then I hope we go for someone like Embolo. I really like Callum Wilson as well but it looks like he's fucked his knee and Bournemouth wouldn't sell IMO.

Mods, I think this should become the January Transfer Window thread ;) :D (y)

Still think a DM is a requirement albeit not as much as a necessity as previously thought. I say this as on occasions I'd like Dier to slot in at CB rather than call upon Fazio.

Another striker is a must, no question about that although I wonder if a deal for Berahino is truly scuppered and that we've set our sights elsewhere or that we target a more orthodox striker.

No way would I sell Chadli. He's not perfect for the system and does fuck-all a lot of the time but he does score goals so he's very valuable in that sense. I'd hold out on selling Dembele as well, but eventually I'm sure he will go (probably next Summer). Fazio can definitely definitely go.

All a bit of a moot point as I can't see us spending big money in January. Pretty sure the only time we did that was when we were under the threat of relegation.

Think things are much more fluid in our fan base. This week we agree. Three games without a win though and anybody bar Kane might need desperately replacing (maybe Hugo as well).

I think if we are well positioned in the league (Top5) and still in the Europa, then it would make sense to make a few additions to the team/squad. We made a huge mistake by not adding to the squad at the right time when Harry was in charge.

I agree with those saying we also need either another CB or a rotation option at DM. The Dier role is absolutely crucial to how we have set up this season -- there's a reason he's played in every match, even against minnows like Qarabag. As things stand, none of our other central midfielders possess the attributes to replace him in case of injury or suspension. The only player in the squad who could play the same role would be Alderweireld, who put in excellent performances as a DM last season for Southampton. Whether Poch has any interest in playing him there remains an open question.

If Alderweireld is indeed our backup option at DM, then we need to bring in another trustworthy CB in order to rotate with him, Vertonghen, and Wimmer. If Poch doesn't see him in that role then we need to bring in a squad player at DM, or else we'll have to completely change our tactics should we lose Dier to injury.

Also more chance of finding the right player available come the summer,
Unless it's another under the radar purchase.

I wonder if there are any high profile strikers or indeed ones we would likely be interested in that have contracts expiring in the summer.

Ship out Fazio and buy a DM as an alternative to Dier

As of now, I'd say so, but I'd still like to see N'Jie and/or Chadli given a proper go in our midweek games in the spot before we spend big on an alternative. I do think we should replace Fazio. I don't really see a need for another midfielder now, as I'd like to see our current options continue to develop. I think one of Dembele or Carroll is likely to be sold this winter, and I still don't think we should be buy a replacement.

Agree with this. It's the only area we don't have credible, long-term back up in the event of an injury to Kane or Son. Get that sorted, and I'd fancy our chances to get some sort of result against anyone, home or away! As far as the midfield, I think we have the moveable creative pieces, and a coach who's shown he can use them.
