Could really do with the likes of Toby, Wanyama and Rose coming back from injury sharpish. After this weekend we've got a hell of a tough run of fixtures. I think it's Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Juve all in the space of 2 weeks. If we're still down to a bare bones squad we'll struggle

Depends on how you define "back" I suppose. He's playing again but only had cameo roles in the last couple of games hasn't he? Still needs to get fitness/sharpness etc. Either way, we need him back to full fitness and the others to return ASAP.

Pretty crappy for Winks. If he hadn't been injured against Palace and kept his form, he'd be pretty much guaranteed a place in the WC squad. Guess he faces an uphill battle now.

Assume it'll be Sissoko rotating with Dembele in CM whilst Winks is out then.
It’s only 2 weeks. And we only really play with 1 CM single pivot now. Which would be Dier/ wanyama. We have loads of flexibility now. Can easily play eriksen/ Lamela either side of the single pivot. Like city play De Bruyne And sliva.

Tottenham team news: Toby Alderweireld targeting first-team return against Liverpool

Toby Alderweireld is expected to return to full training next week and is targeting a first-team return at Liverpool on February 4.

The Tottenham defender has not played since damaging his hamstring against Real Madrid on November 1.

He has resumed outdoor training alone and hopes to join the squad after Sunday’s match at Southampton.

Harry Winks has been ruled out of the game against Saints and the FA Cup tie with Newport County, a week on Saturday, with an ankle injury.

Danny Rose is expected to return to action at the end of the month following a knee problem.

We've been playing 4-2-3-1 (with two holding midfielders) for quite a while now (since Alderweireld got injured?). City play 4-3-3, which I don't think we've ever played.

Not sure either Eriksen or Lamela are suited to our holding midfield position, though Alli can play there.

If we switch to three at the back we still play with two holding midfielders - unless we're chasing a game and take one off to add an extra attacker.

Sorry but you’re completely wrong. We have played with a single CM pivot all season. With 4 at back we play 41221. Just watch closely the next game you will see whoever it is Dier or wanyama sits alone in front of back 4 . Then either eriksen dembele dele sissoko fill in spaces either side. It’s very similar to City. We’ve played it from day 1 this season. I had no idea what was going on in Chelsea game with dembele popping up on the left. But it’s much more fluid. You basically have Dier and Kane in relatively fixed positions and the other 4 in between sort of float around.

You're both right to be honest. We fluidly move between 2 or 3 different formations throughout the game. For example, recently when we don't have the ball we line up looking more like a 433//41221 as you put it, with Dier in the middle and Dembele + Eriksen (or Sissoko, Winks etc.) either side i.e. something like:

--------------------Lloris-----------------
Aurier--Sanchez---Verts---Davies
--------------------Dier-------------------
---------Eriksen------Dembele-----
---Alli------------------------------Son----
-------------------Kane-------------------

But then in possession you might get Dembele or Eriksen pushing forwards and Dier moving forwards to plug the gap they left so we end up in more like a 4231:

--------------------Lloris-----------------
Aurier--Sanchez---Verts---Davies
--------------------------------------------
-------------Dier------Dembele-----
---Alli----------Eriksen--------Son----
-------------------Kane-------------------

I think people give too much relevance to specific formation to be honest. Teams move around all the time depending on who has the ball, where the ball is, what the score is etc. and I think our team in particular is one of the most fluid in the premiership.

Fair point on one DM being more fixed than the other, who will have licence to roam, but essentially their positions are two DMs. And any of the three ahead of them (when playing 4-2-3-1) may drop deep to pick up the ball, but that doesn't change the fact they're in an attacking three. Same applies in 3-4-2-1.

But also fair point from 'O Zio above about the fluidity.

Haven't watched too much of City so I'm not sure how fluid their 4-3-3 is - I assume it's all over the place with everyone attacking?!
