How are we getting on points wise compared to this time last year. Sure there is something out there, I just can't be assed looking. It must be close.

after match day 20 we had 45 points, we currently have 36

but if you take the same 20 fixtures we've played this season compared to last season then we've taken 3 more points. i think this is a more accurate reflection for comparing results.

Really? It doesn't take into account the variation in quality of opposition from one season to another, when the game was played whether midweek or Saturday morning for example. Actually think it's the least accurate of all.

Shit, that much. Tho taking by who we have played, and where, which is probably more important, looks good. Man I love this team.

Given both variations...I say second is most relevant...as poster said.

why does the day it's played on matter? i think it's a fairer reflection because it takes away fixture bias, the 2nd half of last season we had to go to the etihad/emirates/goodison/stamford bridge/anfield but this season we've already got the first three out of the way. obviously it's never going to be water tight but it's better than just going by each match day as the table does lie at week 20 and will continue to lie until the final game basically.

Don't you think it makes a difference if you play on the Sunday after everyone else has played on the Saturday?

I dont think it does no. Only time it makes a difference is when you have had more or less rest between games than the opponents. The other thing that makes a difference for me is in a busy period, where your fixtures are ie we ve had it tough playing in Birmingham then in the north east within 4 days over Christmas.

I really don't. Can see what you're saying but think more important who we are playing and how we are playing.

Ok, we'll use the other one as much more accurate because we're doing better. Forget I said anything.

Thats the one I would always use tbh. I dont really see the other one as being accurate at all - if we were top of the league after 4 games having played 4 poor teams at home i wouldnt be as optimistic as i would be if we had won 4 tough games.

That said - the stats men ie sky sports tend to compare to this time last year (ie who is bottom at xmas etc) as i guess momentum is equally important and with the 2nd one, form isnt taken into account.

As you said spursbear - none are really comparable tbh

not really. we had europa last season so we had a lot of sunday games then too, although obviously we've advanced to the knockout rounds this season so we'll be getting a few more. we had 45 points at this point last season so we only took 24 from the remaining 18 games, i'm sure we'd all be disappointed if we didn't better that this time around.

That's the only reason I see it as slightly more beneficial, but as I said I think none of them are accurate at all.

If anything, I think the one that shows we have less points is actually a lot more favourable towards us, I don't expect us to fall away like we did last year and also we have already played Utd/City/Arse all away from home.

Nothing can be compared. The EPL is more competitive this season. Everton and West Brom have joined in, Stoke are better than last season etc etc. Only Newcastle have dropped out thus far.

"Lesser" teams are getting better at coping and picking up points.

Everton and west Bromwich have replaced Newcastle and a.n.other from last year. It's all relevant.

We had 45 points after 20 games last year? Wow. So we averaged about a point a game then on?!

After 19 games this season we had 33 points, given that we do the same in the other 19 games, who here would have been happy with 66 points after all 38 games when we had a managerial change in the summer?

In general, last season or not, we need to be careful how our leaue position stands. With games in hand with other clubs and goal differentials, Spurs are anywhere between 3rd and 6th in the table depending how those games in hand play out... Sadly, the cliched "must win" applies to the reading game...
