Tottenham North London Derby hero Hugo Lloris one of the 3 best keepers on Earth says Pochettino

"Unbelievable" Frenchman shone in Saturday's 1-1 draw away to Arsenal - especially with "amazing" save that somehow denied Per Mertesacker a winning goal

Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Hugo Lloris as one of the best three goalkeepers in world football.

Tottenham boss Pochettino also rates Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny as in the smale class as his man Lloris and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer.

That goes against Jose Mourinho’s view, who reckons his Chelsea squad includes two of the best three keepers on the planet in Thibaut Courtois and Petr Cech.

But after France captain keeper Lloris’ heroics on Saturday at the Emirates as Spurs drew 1-1 with arch-rivals Arsenal, it is hard to disagree with Pochettino.

Lloris, who has gained a reputation as being a state-of-the-art “sweeper keeper”, made a world-class save from Per Mertesacker, and his handling throughout was brilliant.

Pochettino said: “I think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, not just the Premier League. He is unbelievable.

“Neuer, Szczesny... I think there’s a lot of good keepers. But Lloris is one of them.

“It was an amazing save that he made from Mertesacker. From my position [on the touchline] it was an unbelievable save. On TV it looks even better.”

Neuer may be most people’s choice as world number one but Lloris may actually be the better player with his feet, even if the German keeper gets the vote for his penalty box heroics and, of course, he’s just won the World Cup.

The White Hart Lane club's other outstanding performer in the North London Derby was revitalised centre-back Younes Kaboul, who was magnificent as he headed, cleared and blocked everything.

There is no doubt that handing the French defender the captain’s armband after the sale of Michael Dawson to Hull was a surprise, but Kaboul has relished his new role and uses it as an inspiration.

Pochettino said: “When we decided to put the armband on him, it is because we feel there is something special about him. He is a very good guy, a big character, like other players like Hugo and [striker Emmanuel] Adebayor. But it is important to feel that you have a captain whose qualities you believe in.

“We have a lot of games ahead. We are working in a difficult moment because we had a lot of players at the World Cup and when you arrive late back then it’s always difficult.

“We need time, we need to change some things and we are in the process. We need time to improve and the players need time to adapt to our philosophy because we play in a different system.”

Pochettino is relishing the prospect of facing Southampton, the club he left this summer to join Spurs, next weekend and insists that he is happy to see them doing so well under Ronald Koeman.

Pochettino added: “I love Southampton. I love the people in Southampton. I am happy for them because 90 per cent of the players were with us last season.

“For me, it was a fantastic period in my life. I got the opportunity to come to Tottenham, to stay in the Premier League. I love a lot of people in Southampton and I’m very happy for them.”

Spurs rookie Ryan Mason, who made his Premier League debut at Arsenal, admits he probably would have quit White Hart Lane but for Pochettino coming in this season.

The 23-year-old, loaned out seven times by prior regimes since 2009, said: “The change in manager helped me. If previous managers were still in charge maybe I wouldn’t be here.

“There have been times when I have questioned whether I would have to move away. I’ve had a few opportunities to leave.

“It’s been a massive week for me with three games in five days. I played for the reserves on Monday, then against Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday and now at Arsenal.”

Hard to disagree...Neuer, Courtois, and Lloris in my opinion. That being said there are A LOT of very good keepers around at the moment.

Szczesny is a fucking **** and I hate him but he's a good keeper. Prone to trying to do too much with the ball at his feet, but overall he is a pretty good keeper.

Improve him kicking and distribution and he will be. Until he does that he's not in the top 3 or 4 keepers in the world. He's definitely up there though.

Not only is a a ****, but more importantly he is not a great keeper at all. He's one of the better ones in teh PL i guess, but not even close to top 10 or 15 in the world, let alone the elite. Ridiculous.
