Just watched it back and it really is unforgiveable. That's basic sunday league shit - just get rid of the fucking ball at that point in the match.

Not going to read too much into it, but I hope that Winks becomes a Europa/League Cup option once Lo Celso returns as he simply can't be relied upon to do much of anything except maintain possession against teams with no threat.

Agree, the vitriol Winks is getting is totally over the top on this board (surprise surprise) it wasn't his fault for the 1st or 2nd West Ham goal and he got blocked off for the (albeit wordie of a goal) 3rd. You may as well blame Bale and Moura as well as the defence but why not pick on Winks!

The amount of "experts" saying "hE sHoULDa jUst HoOFeD IT" does my head in. The split second in which he draws his leg back for enough power to do such a thing means the West Ham plays gets there first. It's so fucking obvious yet he gets absolutely fucking slayed for actually doing the right thing and winning the ball...

Ah well, like I said I don't think he's our answer and he isn't - just Lo Celso not fit - but the hate is ridiculous. and the reasons for the hate even more so. Does my head in the way players get slayed

You "watched it back" and you think he has time in that 50/50 to get the power needed to "ave it"?

ffs...

It was a rookie mistake from Winks. He’s fallen behind in the pecking order now and lacks match fitness.

Yup. Just launch it up in the air. With their feet. Like footballers do...

ffs...

I was originally of the same opinion as you and was actually going to make a post defending Winks, but upon watching it back I truly do think he fucked up badly. He tried to be cute rather than just lumping it and instead put the ball in the absolute worst part of the pitch.

Do you honestly think he's not to blame?

Beginning to get the feeling a hell of a lot of Spurs fans don’t have the slightest idea of how fast real football is...

Yes of course Winks chose not to clear it upfield. Nothing to do with the fact that by doing so the opposing player would have got the ball first.

Christ on a bike. Of all the things to slay him for lol

Funny that Micah Richards and Danny Murphy never thought that was an option.

But you'd know better than them probably

I like Micah Richards a lot but Danny Murphy chats a colossal amount of shite.

If we constantly defer to every opinion of the pros have then this forum would be boring as fuck.

Nothing new to me really, I'm not even mad at Winks but I just know you only get so much from him. If he's selected I don't expect him to turn into anything I haven't seen already. I personally just hope we get to a stage where we have too many much better options for him to get as much of a look in as he has been getting, as harsh as that sounds.

Fine.

how about you try this empirically.

Go get a ball - and simulate that exact moment. see how much power you can get in the ball with no back lift.

Then see how much time it takes to draw your leg back to drive through enough power to "ave it" clearance.

Of all the things you can have a pop at Winks about this is not the fucking hill to die on. If he'd tried to hoof it the West Ham player would have got the ball first and you'd be slaying him for the needless freekick on the edge of the box with Creswell over it.

Fuck me - I know it was a disappointing result but this utter incomprehension about pure physics is embarrassing.

He made the right choice. He won the ball. It's not his fucking fault (in this particular instance). those suggesting it is look ridiculous.

I get your point.

He couldn't do your classic Peter Kay "AVE IT" kick out of the park with a full backswing.

But he sure as fuck could've kicked the ball into the air rather than trying to take a more delicate touch. Literally anything other than a touch into the danger area.

I even know that this very argument is absurd as I'm fucked off at the result and I'm basically looking for a scapegoat of some kind, but I also feel that this kind of soft, non-clearance, is exactly why we didn't win today and exactly why Winks shouldn't be in the first team. It's a moment that sums up all of my frustrations with him as a player.

It's not just that moment that annoys me. It's how that moment sums up our collective fragility and how his decision sums us up as a team.

I understand your feelings and frustrations but I guarantee you - Winks is not at fault for that phase of play.

slay him for other things but if he’d try to hoof clear it the West Ham player gets the ball first. Guaranteed

The thing is, Winks got the the ball and put it on a plate for Lanzini in area where its possible to have a shot. Even IF he missed the hoof on the initial action(which really anyone who tries to say he would have made it isnt fooling themselves because they dont know whatsoever what would have happened), the west ham player had no angle to shoot. I know which id rather.

No. It really is not a guarantee.
