Just think he needs to drop down to a midtable or lower team. A move to a Bournemouth, Brighton or say Villa would be great for him. Type of player that will be appreciated plying his trade at that level. Out his depth in a top 6 team imo. Bit like how Joe Allen was appreciated at Swansea but the jump to Liverpool was in the end too great for him so he went to Stoke.

Awful player every game shows it now bang bang average a lot of you boys need to stop making excuses for him

I wouldn't call him average, he is a good player, but not for the way we play.

If we played a CM of 3 players, one holding defensive player, winks and a box to box player, he would work well in that situation. He has shown when he gets time on the ball he can be creative and hit some good passes. My biggest issue is he hasn't pushed on as much as I'd have hopped or develop his game to work in the situation we have in midfield.

Good enough to be a squad player IMO and home grown helps, but we need a better first team option (that goes for both CM places really)

I'd say we have a whole bunch of players that aren't suited to a pivot midfield. Winks is one of them. Sissoko, Dier and Ndombele don't fit it either and it's hard to judge Lo Celso with so little game time. However, put a proper ball winning DM in the middle of a CM3 and I think they'd all look a load more comfortable and effective. Ndombele and Lo Celso both have the ability to carry the ball forwad from deep positions or pick quick transitional passes. Once Eriksen and GLC got on today we looked a load more incisive with the ball but prior to that, Brighton overloaded the midfield v Winks and Sissoko and they not only struggled but couldn't get the ball forward either. I don't think Jose's setup is doing any of them any favours at all. No idea what he'll go with v Norwich but just hope GLC and Ndombele are part of it.

I came here to give a very similar opinion about Winks.
As you say, Ndombele, GLC, winks would all look much better if they were next to a peak, Palacios, Parker or Wanyama. However, unfortunately for Winks, I'd have him near the bottom of the pecking order. If he could adapt into a DM, then he could nail down a place. Unfortunately I doubt it's as easy as that.

How do you know that? How often have we ever seen him in that situation, and against what quality opposition. This goes down for me the same as when people keep advocating Foyth or Jan would be the answer to our DM conundrum.

I think Winks is a good enough player, but at the same time I'm not sure he's any better than say Mason was. Can be a good enough squad player but not a first XI starter if we have ambitions to win stuff.

I far preferred Mason, very brave player with a lot of drive and imagination. Had it not been for injuries at a key time in his early career, hindering the transition from youth to senior, I think he'd have much more to show for his Spurs career than one great season in Pochettino's first.

And - be honest now, leGin - you've still not completely given up on the idea of Mark Yeates coming good for us, have you? :playful:

What I want to now is - after the disallowed goal (from his forward pass) why did he go back to not making any forward passes! Does he have more in his locker but has been told not to risk it or is he just not an intelligent footballer?

Think a move abroad would be good for him. Could see him doing well in Spain or Italy

I wouldn't sell him unless he wanted to leave. He's not first choice imo but still a solid squad player, isn't going to be on an outrageous salary, also homegrown at the club.

When we played a line up like this

And from watching his playing style. He has energy and can pick a pass, but ask him to be a defensive player or be a box to box player and he will fail, so you need him in a CM 3. As for the against what quality? That line up was against Barcelona when we drew 1-1.

But you also agree with what I said, he is a good squad player, but we need to improve what we have in CM currently.

But that was in a game where we had a lot less possession. Against sides that sit compact he's far less effective.

Against a team that sit compact against us, most our players are less effective.
They are, but imo that is en large down to the deeper sitting midfielders not moving the ball forward and quickly enough.as I say he's a good squad player, but nothing more than that for me.

Winks is a currently a good squad player. Whether he has peaked or not remains to be seen. he is getting old enough that his upside isn't looking as high as it used to. However, playing for a new manager or in a new system sometimes unlocks talent or creates a mindset that drives a player upward beyond expectations.

maybe because there was a lack of movement ahead of him? ??‍♂️

Winks was far from crap today ffs.
