Modric was the main one, perhaps stylistically VDV wasn't a great fit for AVB but he's also since said that he regrets leaving Spurs which suggests that it was a choice he made rather than was forced upon him.We were definitely in a weaker position in terms of recruiting / retaining top players back then and AVB wasn't the first manager to suffer the consequences of this (selling Carrick, Berbatov, Keane, Defoe etc. didn't exactly help Jol). However, VDV 's departure was of AVB's making. He signed Sigurdsson, bluntly informed VDV that Gylfi was his new starting no.10, then benched VDV for the opening game of the season. It was a very odd way to treat a fan-favourite player who had contributed 46 goals & assists in 75 games during the previous two seasons...almost as though he was trying to turn the fans against himself.
