Dutch Cup Match Halted After Fan Attacks Opposing Goalkeeper Who Gets Red-Carded For Fighting Back

In American football, players who take down fans who invade the field during play are celebrated.

In the European version, it seems, defending yourself from supporter attacks will get you thrown out of the match.

Today's Dutch Cup round-of-16 match between host Ajax and AZ Alkmaar lasted only 38 minutes before an Ajax supporter invaded the pitch and attacked Alkmaar goalkeeper Esteban, who fought back with kicks. As security hauled the curiously-underweared hooligan, Esteban found himself face to face with referee Bas Nijhuis's red card.

The home crowd screamed with glee as Esteban went apopleptic and Alkmaar manager Gert Jan Verbeek ordered his team off the pitch, halting the match.

Nijhuis defended his decision to issue the red with the ludicrous explanation that Esteban could have simply walked away from the man who ran out onto the pitch and kicked him.

Reading the story I was thinking it was harsh, but when you watch the video, he pretty much dodged the kick, then ran up to the fan while he was down and booted him - you can't do that, you have to show some restraint (though I'd have done the same thing).

He definitely could've just backed off. He wasn't defending himself with that kick.

he could've given him a flower, too. or he could've reacted like 99% of other humans in a hostile stadium where security failed to protect him, which he did. so he got a red card for acting like a human being.

Like I said, I would've done the same, but when you're a pro footballer, you have to hold yourself a little better and be professional.

He wasn't defending himself there.

Odd choice of words in the article calling the fan curiously underwhelmed?

Keeper should have whipped out his wanger and either fapped or pissed over the yobbo fan whilst he was on the floor.

It's curiously underweared - he had his jeans half way down his arse and some peculiar pants on, by the looks

And i have to agree with Kendall, after the initial clash, the keeper didn't need to stick the boot in. That was unnecessary though whether it constitutes a red card i have no idea.

That said, i always believed we should take a leaf out of american stupidball & wrestling where, and a disclaimer is placed on the ticket of everyone there, if you enter the field of play then the clubs and athletes/performers accept no responsibility whatsoever for your health and safety. Quite common to see a drunk wrestling fan leap the barrier and get chinned by someone for their effort.

I don't think the keeper would have been able to simply walk away. The fella could have gotten up after falling and attack him again, this time from a better position than on the floor.

No-one was around quick enough to stop that, so fair play to the keeper. I'd have probably jumped on top rained some punches.

I recently got sent off and kicked out of my football club, so I've now retired. I gto tackled really very late and very high, I reacted badly, I grabbed the fella by the face and threw him. Then 3 of their players steamed into me, throwing punches at me (got caught in the throat). Whilst I didn't punch anyone, I did push them away, but my brother who was watching ran on the pitch, done some of his MMA moves and it ended with 3 knocked out players lieing in the penalty box, with the police being called. I got carted off to A and E with a suspected broken leg (damaged ligaments in knee), and got a red card, whilst a few of the other team got a red card.

THe team don't want me playing for them anymore :)

I've got to agree with Shanks. If someone tries to take you down you have to protect yourself. For all the keeper knew the bloke could have a knife or something.

Hopefully the ref will take another look at the incident.

it's the whole fight or flight thing isn't it.
I can tell you there's no way the keeper would have just stopped after that and waited for the officials/stewards to step in and i doubt many people unless well trained would do.

Your old team is stupid, you were a good goalie for them innit and you have the right to protect yourself and your bro should back you too given how many were against you.

In ruggers there's no problem, they have a jolly good punch-up and then get on with it!

I hope you find another team mate as if you enjoy playing you shouldn't let them spoil it for you.

Although with your latest addition to your clan you probably found yourself tighter for time and this was kinda a deciding factor anyways.

Plus you've had a few nasty injuries from playing... Eek

When my god-father used to play they had virtually had a bed reserved for him at Chase Farm!

He's probably got a hangover last night after getting promoted to the elite development category in UEFA.

In addition Spurs fans favorite Mark Clattenburg was also promoted to the elite list giving England three refs on the Elite list.

Basically it means expect him to start getting games like the Champions League quarterfinals with him probably being Englands representative at the 2014 World Cup.

Like him or not he's one of the fastest rising refs in UEFA.

If you played for Liverpool you would have at least got a mozaic, a t shirt with you picture on it and a few banners.

It's not quite like that with the four major sports here, but the unwritten rule - and sentiment amongst the fans - is you're on your own if you enter the field of play. The fans will laugh for a few moments when an idiot runs on the field, but once he gets blasted by a player or the cops, the crowd erupts in laughter. Tickets are too expensive to have a game ruined for more than a few seconds by some drunk.

In this example, this kid got blasted by the guard lol

Eddie Guerrero got to have a pop at a few fans who decided they needed to step in - this one's a great example

watch the video carefully.

fan comes on tries to attack him. fans tries to kick the keeper falls back on his arse. fan tries to get up keeper kicks him a couple of times so he stays down until stewards arrive.

first of all how does the guy get on the pitch without 10 stewards chasing him?

with a history of things like the monica seles incident what is the keeper supposed to do?????

the dutch fa will hopefully look at it, order the game replayed and recind the red
