Yeah he does look very raw but there's something about him that stands even if it's in sub-par leagues. At the end of the day there are risk/reward elements with all players. Personally I'm more intrigued by a player in the ilk of Orban rather than say Vlahovic.

Like the look of Orban but I'm in no way more intrigued by signing him over Vlahovic. Vlahovic is the perfect striker and exactly what we need. I think he would score a bucket load for us. I think Orban could also fit the system well but if I had the choice of the two, it's Vlahovic all day long.

Knowing our luck, both Orban and Vlahovic will end up at Chelsea

If it's either/or then Vlahovic is definitely a more proven quantity, but then his transfer fee is bound to be at least double or triple that of Orban's.

I'd say he is at least double or triple the player Orban is at the moment and less than half or even a third of the risk.

I suppose the problem is we rarely seem willing to do a deal like Vlahovic- the ready or nearly ready made star. So it’s difficult to get excited about links to players it feels like we are not really serious about. Whereas with a player like Orban we can at least dream about him developing in the way others like Modric, Bale and Son did.

If our interest in Vhaovic was serious to the point it was a genuine question of whether we should buy him or Orban then of course it becomes different. But at the moment it just feels like we may as well as being intrigued about any brilliant player we probably won’t buy.

You could probably say the same about most business we do and don’t do though. For example how much have we spent on right backs since selling Walker and how many of them- like Aurier, Doherty and Spence- were opportunistic buys as opposed to spending double or triple more on surer things.

We have a model that we rarely break with. We look for value (like Maddison) and high potential (like Kulusevski), but seldom identify a position we need to rectify and go out and buy the best ready to go player in that position.

I rate Dusan really highly but aren’t you concerned about his injuries?

Personally I’m concerned about Orban in the sense that I think he could well struggle for a while adapting. Whilst he obviously has great raw natural ability he isn’t refined at all and due to his lack of development in an academy could well take some nurturing when it comes to the tactical side. This doesn’t mean i don’t rate him, he obviously has a lot of natural ability, i just really don’t think we should expect much from him this season if we did buy him.

So like you a player of Dusan’s quality is much more the ideal move for this moment. But I just really really worry about his injuries.

God I'm like a crack addict waiting on any scrap of ITK on Orban or anyone....incoming or outgoing.

I just need a hit...

24 in 37 last season but 10 of them were penalties. In 2023 15 goals but 7 of them were penalties. It's another season when his form dips massively when there are serious talk about his transfer from Lille:ROFLMAO: He's good, but wouldn't say he's worth 60m, more like 40m considering that's how much Wahi and Openda went and they had better season than him. Lille would ideally sell him this transfer window but no one is interested in that price
Like I said I’m not at all convinced by him. I think his pen stats inflate his actual ability quite a bit. I really don’t think he’d be the answer to our issues. We’ve been scouting him for years tho. But I can completely understand why Lille would price him at €70 odd mil as he is worth that to him.

Surely we're at the stage that he is either good enough or isn't

From what you describe he doesn't sound good enough full stop , nevermind the price tag.
He's good, for let's say 40m that would be decent signing and he's better finisher than Richarlison.
Less risk but also lower ceiling than Orban and would take non-homegrown spot this season though so depends what we want to do

Completely agree. He is one of the targets I was hoping wouldnt be mentioned again. Inflated stats due to pens and also more of a second striker than an all out CF himself. Maybe he will surprise me but I dont see him being much better than Richy.

I think for the money being talked about, David represents a really poor bit of business. He looks to be a great finisher, but I don't see anything else standout about his game and he's coming from a weak French league.

I read somewhere today that Orban wants to go to Lille - who can't afford the fee - so I wonder if this is some kind of workaround.

The danger of course then is if Orban smashes it a Lille and is then out of our reach.
In my opinion if we don't sign Orban this window he will be out of reach by January. Hes been in Belgium 8 months and is scoring more non penalty goals than haaland.

I don't often get too excited by anyone when all i've seen is a youtube highlights reel, but I really want this guy, something about him gives me a feeling he'll be a special player.

Yeah it’s hard to compare the two as they are on very different places in their repsectice careers.

My point was more regarding the type of player Orban is, than anything else. I feel like we’ve been missing that x-factor type of player. The way Orban drives forward coupled with good finishing is a bit Mané-esque. Players that create something out of nothing whilst hassling the opponent for 90 minutes. Such a player could elivate us to new heights.

Now, I have no idea if Gift Orban can reach those heights but that type of player, in this system and at this point in time, intrigues me more than Vlahovic.
