Staying Alert

Clive Allen has warned Tottenham fans that Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid will go right to the end of the transfer window.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator and is said to be holding out for a £105million offer from the Spanish giants.

The Spurs flyer has told manager Andre Villas-Boas that he wants to link up with Carlo Ancelotti’s side and a deal is set to be thrashed out in the coming weeks.

The Portuguese chief is expected to reinvest a large proportion of the world-record transfer fee back into the squad but former White Hart Lane favourite Allen claims a deal will need to be done soon if that’s to happen.

“Every player has his price,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “When people are talking about those huge sums of money then Gareth Bale has to go. I thought he might stay another season but, when those sorts of figures are put on the table, it’s hard.

“Daniel Levy will let it go right to the very end of the window, right down to the wire.

“It’s not good for the fans, Andre Villas-Boas or the team. They should change the dates on the transfer window so it’s done and dusted before the season starts.

“It just gives so much unrest for coaches setting up their teams and for the fans who will see the best player at the club leave after the start of the season.”

Harry certainly wanted rid of Bale at one point, and permanently too. Jamie Redknapp said as much at the time.

This is what I fear and what I've been saying on here for the last week or so.

I hope this isn't accurate as I will lose all faith in the board if we sell Bale at the last minute. We have to set a put up or shut up deadline. Other clubs do it, why can't we?

To be honest this is becoming a bloody joke. I'm a staunch Levy fan but I'm bloody sick of this deadline day bollox. Clearly Allen is preparing the fans for the inevitable - and its the worst kind. Selling at the last minute.

At the end of the day a little more on the Bale price tag has priority over absolutely everything - and that's the behaviour of a typical selling Club, even if it disrupts the start of our season and potentially puts us at a disadvantage straight away for the season ahead.

Like its not hard enough to be competing with Arsenal for a top four spot.

No point in blaming the dates of the window, although I agree with him, but its within our control how we manage this.

No hard feelings then, Clive

In all fairness Clive Allen knows fuck all.

I dont imagine it being left to the very last minute if it was to happen. It wont give us enough time to get adequate replacements (yes I know we wont have a player as good as Bale come in) but with the statement of intent brought around by our signings so far, the club obviously see's this summer as key if we want to make the step up - and if we sell Bale at the last minute our season is royally fucked. If anything was going to happen it will happen by the end of this week - I still dont think he is going and I have no doubts at all - but I think with Perez in Miami this is the media's last chance saloon to be right on this. Its the most likely opportunity for them to do a deal if it was to happen, if the week passes with no sale then I think we are home and dry.

The only reason he did not go was because Benny got injured, IIRC.

No, BAE was already scheduled to be absent at the ACN before he got injured and Bale was pencilled in to cover for him at left back. This has been covered a number of times. Bale was our only LB cover and was going to have to play, even if BAE had not been injured.

lol just checked it, quite a bit of back and forth going on.

I've tried to be factual rather than agressive. The stories have all been one way. Henry Winter has come out in support of Liverpool, so why are no journalists doing the same for Spurs? It'd make a terrific read and possible change perceptions?

Depends on your definition of home and dry. GB11 ( grrr, branding ) won't really be committed and happy until a good while after the window shuts.

I dont think he has much of a choice. He has to play well with a smile on his face, else Brand Bale will stagnate. His image isnt that of a playboy diva, he is the clean cut welsh lad that is a happy family man. Sponsors love that. He'll come out with a comment along the lines of 'I am happy at spurs and look forward to putting the speculation behind me and concentrating on football'.

Even his agent will tell him thats what he has to do if he doesnt get his move. Another card for Levy to hold on to.

I'd guess because we aren't talking either on or off the record to journalists. Press conferences don't seem to count. But Barnett and RM aren't exactly shy, hence it's all one way. This sort of thing doesn't bother the Spurs board anymore, which is one good thing about getting used to this crap happening every summer.

You might be right. But he still might be devastated. I'm not a professional footballer but I've missed out on 'dream jobs' because I had to honour my current contract. You're right he'll get over it, I just hope he can keep up the incredible focus on the training ground he's had over the last few years. The professionalism and fitness are really key to the lad's success. If his head's gone then those things might suffer.

The actual quotes came from Alex McCleish didn't they? He's the only one who mentioned he was 'up for sale'.

It does make me laugh though, we believe the Mail and their story about Bale being available back then, but now we don't believe them about Bale to Madrid because we don't want to.

Bale was always going to play because Ekotto was off to ACN, before he got injured.
