interesting how keeps talking us up as title challengers, yet he kinda makes it clear he would like to manage england

if he truly thinks we have the ability to challenge is managing a club to a premier league title not more appealing than...well perhaps a semi final with england at best? the problam with the england team isnt the managers, capello is a great manager, sven wasnt exactly terrible before he got the job, even mclaren has proven that he isnt a total clown, its just the england team arent technically gifted, its all power and pace, which is benificial for premier league teams when mixed with technical foreign talent which makes us so potent in champions league

He's the best leader we have by a country fucking mile.

Agreed. VDV too is captain material moreso than anyone else in the squad he's the ultimate pro and always says the right stuff in interviews.

Am I the only one who thinks overall Gallas is still a better CB than Dawson? love Daws to death but Gallas is pure quality

Yep, I also think VDV should be second in command.

Daws is a rock. But I don't think he has the intelligence to lead. He's one of those players who has to worry about his own game, not others.

well I'd say it's the managers too as all 3 of them you mentioned made similar mistakes like trying to fit in all the big egos instead of building a team that fuctions well together

Couldn't agree more. I was suggesting Gallas (or VdV) as captain a month or so back but just got stacks of abuse. I would keep Gallas as captain over Dawson and King; he is far more vocal and some of our players need that kind of motivation.

I have backed the Gallas signing since day 1. I said repeatedly if you had watched Arsenal last season you would have seen Gallas SINGLE HANDIDLY hold that defence together. Vermaelen got alot of credit for his goals much like Lescott and Terry do, as an actual defender he is still very raw and positionally bit naive and concentration is poor but a top top talent that will be a Vidic like CB.

Anyway Gallas didnt have to win me over, top player when he's up for it. Last 18months he has been quiet and done his job with no fuss and argueably its been his best defensive displays for Arsenal and us.

He should be captain because he is experienced, been a captain at club and country level. It's very easy to blame the France debacle getting out of hand on him as a captain, BUT for me there were so many things wrong with the manager, squad that Emlyn Hughes couldn't have tamed that bunch of idiots and donkey of a coach aswell.

Also like Harry said, Tom is a quiet guy so is Luka, Daws is vocal but again a nice guy, Ledley is a bit quiet and is captain more example than anything else. On that basis I think Gallas can be a captain too, by example if he behaves and leads like he did. Also Gallas can be nasty, I've seen him have a go at Kaboul and thats what he needs because Younes Kaboul could be one the best CB in the world if he gets his head sorted and concentrates, he could learn alot about positioning and reading play from Gallas.

Can I just add that sure Arsenal conned us out of millions and stole our best player in Sol Campbell, but now measure that against Gallas on a free captaining us with an immense display at the Emirates to a comeback win in an incredible game? I'd call us not even but getting there...lol

I hope people turn around and tell the boo boys to shut up if anyone near them is booing gallas next game!

Also regarding the captaincy, I don't agree that when Dawson comes Bach he should automatically get the captaincy ahead of gallas. If things go well with gallas as captain, I see no need to rock the boat. As for king, I'm not sure! He will always be a leader of men with or without the armband so if things under gallas go superbly well I'd be hesitant in giving it back, even to L. King! I know that's controversial and I'm gonna get a slagging now but it's just a thought....king is still god in my eyes but I wouldn't rock the boat if things are going well.
Peace!

Agree with all of this.

A lot of positives expressed here over Gallas (both the signing and as captain). I'd like to think it was the loud minority standing behind the "we hate arsenal" stigma making booing noises when he was signed....because on the facts alone, fee, experience etc...the deal when we signed him was a great one.

Like lots of you have said, he is the most vocal leader in our pack, on a par with VdV, but as one guy pointed out...sometimes better having your captain amongst the defense (rather than flapping about like keane up front).

Only thing no one has mentioned in their pre-game lineups for wednesday is whether he will have recovered from his obvious knock on saturday in time. COYS.

If anyone was in doubt over his captaincy credentials... Taken from Evening Standard and copied and pasted from phone so sorry if it doesn't come out right!

Jermaine Jenas hailed William Gallas' captaincy credentials after the defender led Tottenham to their first victory at Arsenal for 17 years.

Manager Harry Redknapp looks set to retain Gallas as skipper for the foreseeable future after his controversial decision to hand the 33-year-old the armband was vindicated in Saturday's 3-2 win.

The thought of Gallas captaining Tottenham would have been anathema to some of the club's fans following his summer defection from the club's arch-rivals.

But the Frenchman went a long way to winning over his critics with a heroic performance at the Emirates Stadium as Spurs completed one of the greatest comebacks in north London derby history after being 2-0 down.

Midfielder Jenas said: "Absolutely brilliant he was. From start to finish, he was fantastic for us and I was so pleased for him.

"The pressure was on him, everyone was watching him and he got the armband and led by example.

"He is fantastic. He led by example and he was a voice in my ear, especially in that second half when the team needed me to sit a little bit more and graft in front of them and try and get around Cesc (Fabregas).

"He was in my ear constantly trying to help me because it's not natural to me. And I did it.

"He is a laugh as well. He has come to Spurs and wants to work and win games and he has given us that experience that we probably needed."

Gallas showed great maturity at the final whistle on Saturday, refusing to join in his team-mates' jubilant celebrations in front of the visiting fans.

He was nevertheless "over the moon", according to Jenas, who added: "He's just said to me, 'I am so happy, I am going to hang out with my kids now'."

Gallas had the last laugh on Saturday after being jeered throughout the match and snubbed during the pre-match handshake by former team-mate Samir Nasri.

Defensive partner and match-winner Younes Kaboul said: "William is an experienced player: he is very clever, very intelligent.

"It is normal in football that the other fans will boo him, but going over that, those people are cheap - they do not remember well what William did for Arsenal before.

"They should respect him for that. William won and that was the answer."
