yesterday 15/2/07
Today's announcement of a letter of intent signed by the clubs with UEFA and FIFA signals a welcome and long-sought change in governance of football.
By entering into a real and mature dialogue with the clubs, UEFA and FIFA have signalled their intention to correct the imbalance that exists in the governance of the game at European and international levels. Through the creation of a new, independent European Clubs Association, clubs will be appropriately represented in the decision-making bodies in UEFA and FIFA and a number of long-standing issues, such as the compensation for player participation in European Championships and World Cups should be resolved.
Once such a European Clubs Association is in place, it may become the sole independent representative body defending the interests of clubs at European and international levels.
G-14 members will next meet at a General Assembly on 15 February in order to decide upon the future of the organisation.
