And that's fine. Let me clarify, abusing others on social media isn't fine. We've had the argument over whether dier is shit or not, we can disagree 👍.

My concern is that when he goes, the there are particular fans who will latch onto the next player, regardless of reality.

I saw it on Facebook, straight after the barca game, people ranting about how shit sanchez was, despite him having a good game. There was no logic to it at all.

It's not called 'blind hatred' for nothing. There are a couple of threads on here that are completely awash with it and I do fear for some peoples mental health when I read some of it. Football and driving really do bring out the worst in a lot of people.

Oh come on now. So “abuse” is ok as long as it’s not our players?
Probably depends on what you consider abuse. First, it should never ever be directed at our own players. Whether its right or wrong, its counterproductive to the team's and fan's goals. it's beyond moronic and shows an inability to control one's emotions.

With regard to opposing players, there are levels to "abuse". "You're shit" being sung is probably not true abuse. "You're shit" being screamed probably is. Professionals probably become pretty immune to that stuff. That's why it escalates beyond that. With fan banter, everyone's in on the joke. With fan abuse, someone's becoming the punchline. so yes, going after opposing players should be part of the game subject to crossing certain lines. i suspect our difference is on what constitutes abuse. If you are talking only about the second kind, we agree.

If it’s being screamed at the player at the ground I’d agree that’s not productive. However suggesting Dier is shit on a forum or while having a pint among friends isn’t anything to get one’s knickers in a twist about.

Ask him to sign a new contract on the money he deserves to earn as 5th/6th choice CB, who is hardly ever going to play and lets see how loyal he is.
Show me any player that would agree to that.... it has nothing to do with loyalty. They have 1 career, its short and so they must take their finances seriously.. you wouldn't accept such terms in your current field of employment..would you?

The time he said “I hear people say stuff about Tottenham and I don’t like it.” The time he climbed into the stands to stand up for his brother. The time he ruined West Ham fans’ weekend by scoring on his debut. The time he shitwhipped half the Chelsea team in their own backyard. The many times him and Dele made me laugh with their absurd banter.

Maybe he is a good player requiring better coaching, maybe he‘s lost a little something over the years, maybe he’s simply not the right fit for Ange. I don’t know. But I do know there are many reasons why I love Eric Dier. And it’s not just because he loves me.
I couldn't have said it better... I love Eric Dier.

Indeed, but my point is players are in general (there are exceptions) only loyal as long as it suits them to be. Any club must do what's best for the collective, and as such if it's time they are moved on the player has to accept that or just not he part of the plans. We don't owe Dier(or any other player) anything out of loyalty except to honor his contract. He doesn't owe us anything but to honour it as long as he's under contract. All this loyalty stuff is bullshit from both sides it's about legalities of contracts and nothing else.

Any ITK on this? I find it hard to believe that he removed all mention of Spurs from his socials just because Ange didn't hand him the captaincy. The most likely scenario by far is that he's been asked to find a new club.

While i agree with you there is one distinction. There are ways of communicating "he's not good enough" or "he's shit" that says he is still one of ours and that's what i think some object to because it spills into the stadium and becomes part of the environment the player has to play in. I'd be curious to hear the thoughts of @rossdapep or any others regarding the impact that they know (as opposed to suspect) it has on the players. cheers

Okay I can accept it put that way.

Think this sums up the issue. Most of these events were years and years ago now

Our defence is our biggest problem... it has totally stagnated since Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Walker etc... it's a combination of not prioritizing the defence, buying the wrong players when we have made deals and the tinkering of managers...

Dier has survived for a long time.... Hugo as well... Davies, Sanchez, Tanganga, Sessegnon... until now. And it's time to draw the line and start all over.... Unless you are world class, a huge talent, new at the club or fit into Ange's style... No one should be safe in defence at the moment.

We need to be more dynamic and athletic at the back. (CB's)... It's all a bit dinosaur-like right now.

It has nothing to do with Dier as a person.

I can only hope that this summer marks the end of our obsession with hanging on to players far past the point where any other club would've sold them - particularly English players.

Levy seems obsessed with keeping these types under any circumstances - he did it with Dele, Eriksen, and you could argue it's blinded him to the importance of putting your effort into actually winning trophies, not winning transfer windows and battle with rival chairmen.

Dier can leave and should be afforded the respect we should give every player. Social media is a toxic hell hole and if I was a professional footballer I wouldn't be anywhere on any of it.

Spills into the stadium? Disagree. Fans at the stadium have their own pair of eyes and can see how useless Dier is. There’s no way of telling whether forum talk is responsible for stadium criticism.

I can only speak for myself but there’s certainly no hatred there for Dier. I think he’s shite at football. I also think he’s a good bloke. I also thank him for his effort over the years.
Now over on the LevyOut thread for instance there’s a wave of disgusting comments that I think your comment would be better aimed at.

It’s amazing how quickly it’s become the accepted opinion that he’s not good enough. Two seasons ago he was good; good enough to win back his England place for the World Cup.

Last season he was poor, but the team was falling apart and I’m not sure it’s fair to read too much into performances in that team. Isn’t there a more than 50% chance in a settled team he reverts back to 21/22 form?

We do have a lot to shift but there's already been big steps to address our defence.

Our first choice back line is now probably Emerson, Romero, VDV, Udogie in front of Vic.

I rate Dier more highly than most, but at the moment it seems fairly clear that Ange's system is just about the worst possible fit for him.

If I were Moyes I'd have got Dier in for West Ham ahead of Maguire - he's better and that system would fit him perfectly.

Stupid comment. You are shite at judging football players. He’s demonstrably, factually good enough to play in the toughest league in the world.
